Police Greg writes, "Hi Andy, Just been looking at your site,
and have to say, its pretty impressive. I am an SC in Devon &
Cornwall, and work in and around the Plymouth area - E Div.
Just thought I would send a couple of pics for you of our local
units down here." |
Surrey Galaxies
| Surrey Police have recently taken delivery of
three marked Ford Galaxy vehicles for use in targetted patrols
in the county. Here's a couple of snaps of Surrey Specials
showing off their new toys! |

SO Colin Dowman and SO Nikki Dowman (yes, they're married!) with one of them... |

Welsh Focus
| From SC Stu Phillips, St.Davids City Police,
Dyfed-Powys Police |
|
Thought I would send you this photo of me,
with one of the Dyfed-Powys Police Ford Focus
cars. Hopefully you will be able to put it
on your web-site as one of the first pictures
from a Welsh force.
An interesting fact for you. St.Davids is
the smallest City in the UK, with only three
regular officers and two Specials.

Mini Miles from Home
| This photo was sent to me by Pete Cavallo
who lives in Orange County Florida USA. He used to own
this ex-Liverpool England police Cooper S, complete with all
the equipment - roof box, sirens, radio, accident signs,
accident lights, etc. |
 |
Peter used to exhibit it at local car shows
in the US and
says it would get almost TOO MUCH attention. He has since
sold on the vehicle but we're pleased to still have the
picture here! |

Warwickshire Heart Starter!
From Garry Swinburn, Section Officer with
Warwickshire Special Constabulary.
Warwickshire Specials have a new vehicle
- the first car of its type used by any Special
Constabulary as it will carry a portable
Automatic External Defibrillator, more commonly
known as a heart start machine. It is also
the first police car in Warwickshire to be
fitted with a satellite navigation system.
It's a fully equipped VW Passat estate provided
by local sponsor SPIRIT Volkswagen, with
other police suppliers, Woodway Engineering,
Ringway Vehicle Graphics, Siemens VDO Automotive,
Tildawn, FIX FIRE, Warwickshire Ambulance
service and even the biggest local Radio
Station Heart FM!!
The Heart Start capability has really helped
in not only procuring the car but in the
publicity surrounding it, and as we have
a very rural area to patrol (Southam, Warwick,
Kenilworth and Leamington), it will really
help us out. We are in the final throws of
negotiating a trailer and we will be then
trying to procure an Air Shelter, giving
us the option to set up a truly portable
police station. The project has been really
hard work, with four of us making up the
main contingent of bodies, but we got there.
On its first weekend of patrol, it ended
up clearing off the nuisance youths in the
town, protecting the scene of an RTC, 12
pace searches, 2 alarms one confirmed burglary,
3 stopped in a shed of a car, all with previous
car theft against them, and one arrest for
warrant!! That was just the Saturday!!
Met's Crime Prevention Car

Back yard of Plaistow Police Station, East
London |
From John Stockwell, Sub-Divisional Officer
with the Metropolitan (London) Police.
A friend of mine restores genuine ex Police
vehicles from several different forces. Our
unit was trying to get sponsorship for a
crime prevention car to be used on our area.
We had no offers of a new vehicle and at
the time my friend was finding it hard to
get the original bits to restore this SD1
Rover, an ex-Met police area car. It was
suggested we fully kit the car out in current
Met police livery. We got sponsorship for
nearly all the equipment and used it for
about four years, taking it to Police shows,
local schools, shopping centres and other
locations to promote Crime Prevention.
When it was finally withdrawn from service,
the vehicle remained in its livery and is
still owned by my friend as part of his collection,
along with a P6 Rover Met area car, Austin
Allegro and Metro panda cars, two Vauxhall
Senators and various other ex Police vehicles!

Colchester's Freelander
 |
Here's a photo of Land Rover Freelander that
was provided to us by H.R.Owen of Colchester.
Sadly she has gone back now and we are waiting
for a replacement. Fingers crossed we will
get a Range Rover but somehow I think not
although a Discovery may not be out of the
question!

Division, Essex.

Northumbria Police's Unusual Patrol Car
Now some shots of an unusual police car -
for the UK anyway! The car pictured
below is on long term loan from Orange County
Sheriffs Department, in Florida USA.
 |
Steve Clare explains: "it is the second
car we've had from them, although the previous
one was exactly the same, just a little older!
It is a Ford Crown Victoria, and has a 4.8ltr
V8 engine, will do a top speed of about 145mph
and will hit 60mph in a little over 7 seconds.
And this is their STANDARD patrol car, equivalent
to our Ford Fiestas! And just to put
it into proportion, it weighs 2.5 tonnes
and is the same length as a Ford Transit
hi-top personnel carrier!
So, why have we got it? Well, Orange
County provided the first one to us, simply
because we are one of the biggest forces
in the country (geographically), and so I
guess they thought it would get seen by more
people! It was dedicated in the memory
of one of their officers who died in the
line of duty, and they decided to put it
to some good use. So it came over here
in 1997 and has been used primarily for Crime
Prevention work, such as large shows or conferences
around the UK, as well as large events where
it was used just to attract attention - and
believe me, it did!
If you notice some of the livery on it, it
has a lot of Crime Stoppers info on it. This
is because they also use it as a promotional
tool. However, it is insured for police use,
and we have used it operationally a couple
of times. It is quite funny when you try
to stop a vehicle in it, the look on the
punters face is usually pretty funny! So
because of the success of the first one,
in March 2001 they sent us a 2000 spec model,
as pictured.
