Warwickshire National Specials Weekend 2003

A photo from AO Dave Malin from Warwickshire Police specials, Stratford District.

He writes, "I enclose a photo of some of us during the National Specials Weekend in February.  We held an open day at our local station (Alcester), which attracted some of the local dignitaries".

From L-R: SC Pete Dorman, SAO Mike Weddell, SO Pete Johnson, SC Jill Houghton, SC Ian Jones, AO Dave Malin

BTP - From Attestation to Active Duty

Some shots of BTP Specials, sent in by Ali Haq who is a Special based at Ipswich

Ali writes, "Hi Andy here's a picture of me and other specials after our attestation and presentation of our warrant cards in December 2002.

Thank you Andy once again - great web site, it was your web site that made me a special" (aw, shucks...)

Training at Tadworth with other specials.  Ali is on the far left of the group.

Handcuff training at Tadworth, November 2002.

Ali was pictured on the front page of the local Ipswich paper following a death on the railway line which involved BTP in the subsequent clean-up and investigation.  He's on the far right in the picture.

W. Yorkshire Specials Ready for Anything!

From SC Sally Baines:

"Here's some pictures of Huddersfield's first special constables' PSU (police support unit) team.  West Yorkshire Police kitted out and trained 62 specials in March 2003 to Level 3 PSU, the first force in the country to do so. There are plans for more specials to be trained later in the year.

Our training was actually more advanced than the probationer constables receive, and we spent a very sunny Sunday in Leeds running about in full 'riot gear' with shields, having bricks chucked at us and running through petrol bombs. We are now available for deployment and there are plans to use specials PSU teams at football matches, concerts and events across the force area".

L-R: Section Officer Dave Micklethwaite, SC Sally Baines, Section Officer Sharon Whitehead, Paul Hirst, Section Officer Gary Thorley and SC Richard Hoyle

Kent Coppers Tackle Nuisance Kids

Top L-R: SC Tony Shaw, SC Korhan Roberts

Bottom L-R: SC Jess Adams, SC Dave Hopper, SC Dave Saunders (apparently not holding his stomach in anymore), SC Kerry Davy and SC Louise Aylward

SC Dave Saunders of Kent Constabulary sent this group photo.

He writes, "Here is a few of us down in Canterbury with me in the middle a lot less shiny and new than my previous picture (see below!), I have now picked up the nickname of Jonah and Dangerous Dave... that probably isn't a good thing, but, as before, don't go telling anyone :)

(doh sorry Dave! - Andy)

All part of Operation Darkness, tackling nuisance youths and underage drinking/drugs use in public areas of Canterbury."

National Specials Weekend in Surrey

Surrey SC "Zubi" Mahmood sent this pic, which was taken at Epsom police station in Surrey during the National Specials Weekend which took place in February 2003.  During this weekend many thousands of Specials worked across the country (largely as normal!) but there was heightened publicity to raise the profile of the Special Constabulary.

From L-R: SO Deller, SC Mahmood, Chris Grayling - MP for Epsom, Insp. Adams.  Also third from right is Steve Baker, Chief Officer of Surrey's Specials.

Linda Joins Greater Manchester Police

Here's Linda Gavin,a very proud (and very straight-backed!) new Special at her February 2003 attestation ceremony.

It took place in The Chapel at Sedgley Park Training School in Prestwich, Manchester.  Also in the picture are Linda's "new mates Tracy and Derek (an ex Irish Guard)".

Click on the image to see the big picture, where In front of her are: The Reverend Thomas (chaplain for GMP), and David Gledhill, GMP's Chief Commandant (well his hands at least!).  Standing at the pulpit is one of GMP's Sub Divisional officers.

Thames Valley Specials out in Force!

"The first photo is of our Immediate Response Unit in action on a fox hunt near Thame in October 2002. The PSU gear is part of the kit fortunately - mud alert!

The second is our Display Team and an array of TVP hardware at the Emergency Services 999 day, held in Chalfont St. Peter in July 2002".

Dawn Breaks over Surrey

SC Eleanor Davis of Surrey Police sent these two photos for the gallery.

In the first, she's ordering a pizza.  Then she's standing outside the car waiting for it to be delivered.

These photos were apparently taken at 6 in the morning after a long night shift!

Slough Specials

2001 inspection by Superintendent Langston at Slough

From David Davies, a Special with TVP

Parades offer the occasional chance to put on your best bib and tucker, stand very straight and get inspected by the top brass -- here's Slough officers doing their stuff.

Relaxing after an inspection in 1998, again at Slough

See these cuffs...?

SC Graeme Duncan of Grampian Police sent these great photos.

"Hi there I am a shiny new special in Kent County Constabulary based in Canterbury. We have a unit of 25. I have enclosed a pic of me - yes I am holding in my gut!"

Don't worry Dave I won't tell a soul, it'll be our secret...

No Strings on Me...

SC Steve Lindsay of Gloucestershire Police sent us this shot of him in action!

Steve is based at Berkeley Police Station, Dursley. The picture was taken in July 2002 as part of a promotion for their new mobile police station (in the background), and also a Don't talk to Strangers campaign which he arranged.

Steve (and this picture) was featured in the September 2002 edition of "Special Beat", the Home Office magazine for Specials.

Surrey Group

Here's a picture from 1998 of a group of Surrey Specials, taken in the green and pleasant grounds of Headquarters.  Many of these officers have gone on to be regulars.

Target Weekend for W Yorkshire Specials

From SC Sally Baines, West Yorkshire Police (Huddersfield)

SO Andy Gale and SO Sharon Whitehead getting slightly carried away during West Yorkshire Police Target Initiative Specials Weekend at Bishopgarth in Feb 2002. We spent an afternoon brushing up on our open hand skills, and receiving Public Order and Riot training.

All the Specials who attended the Target weekend in the Drill Yard at Bishopgarth. We had to be in the yard by 9am, in best uniform and with very shiny boots!

Time for SO Gale to get a close up inspection by the Chief Superintendent Adam Briggs. Remember to keep those hands by your side and eyes straight ahead (oh how we all love a parade...)

SC Phil Dennis gets chummy with Surrey's Chief Constable, Denis O'Connor

SC Matt Ashmead and SC Kelly Quirke meeting John Denham (Minister for Policing) and Surrey Police's Chief Officer for Specials, Stephen Baker

SC Natasha (Tasha) Munday looks a little concerned as SC Matt Brown beams demonically next to her

SC's Matt Brown and Steve Eagling do their very best to look scary (it's not working chaps)

Smile please! Oh, OK... SC's Pauline Elliott and Fiona Broughton (again)

Two officers on mountain bikes, SC Steve Farrell and A/SO Nicola Brown.

These two officers obtained sponsorship from local businesses to get the equipment and now provide patrols around the Jesmond and Gosforth area of Newcastle.

They also police major public events using the bikes, which can be much faster than running over long distances!
