Scottish banknotes are NOT legal tender down south, apparently. Most folk up here seem to think they are while raging about how they were refused in an English shop.

But they are accepted by custom and practice and all clearly state 'Sterling' on them. Anyone refusing them in the UK is just plain stupid, in my opinion. It's not as if they get charged extra when taking all the dosh to the bank, as is the case overseas. That's why it's not worth arguing the toss abroad, as the foreign banks often only accept English folding stuff in a UK context.

My Irish missus was enraged when a sales assistant wouldn't take her Ulster tenner. It was funny watching the staff's collective brains going into tailspin, though. Don't they train these people? Isn't taking money part of their job?

Re stamps being used to repay a debt, Photo-me used to send me stamps to the value whenever I complained about pics not developing well. As someone once described as a 'facial contraceptive', maybe I shouldn't have moaned.

I can assure you that having worked in a betting shop, Scots notes and NI notes are acceptable. NI notes were often a bit more confusing though as generally we are so unfamiliar with them. We were worried about getting them confused with the old ROI banknotes which we weren't allowed to accept.

Acceptable, but not legal tender, not that there's a great deal of difference between the two. To be honest, a shop can accept anything it likes in payment.

As an aside. Scottish notes are not legal tender ANYWHERE, even in Scotland

The only coinage which is actually legal tender in Scotland, is actual coin of the realm itself.

Funny old World, eh?

Can't quite remember (it was years ago), but I seem to think that 'money' whether it be cheques, cash whatever are just there to show the worth in Gold. As that is what was always used to pay for ANYTHING.

Could be talking rubbish as like I said it was years ago!!!

About 14 years ago I couldn't get a postmaster in my local Post Office to accept a States of Jersey note.

He said he couldn't take it because he didn't know the exchange rate!

What a load of old hoof he was talking!
I worked on a main post office counter for years and we used to take just about anything, torn, forged, any UK notes and just put them through to the remittance unit to exchange the value for english currency

For the discharge of a debt, the amount to be discharged depends upon the demonitations that can be used to discharge it, eg something like you can pay up to £10 debt with 20p's, but not 5p's....

This does not mean that Euro's are "Legal Tender", but many shops will take them on request.

Go down to Kent and many shops take Euro's. When I stayed in Dover I think every shop accepted Euro's.

If the creditor is happy to take euro's, that's up to them. If they want to take empty capri sun packets, that's also up to them. see http://www.policespecials.com/forum/index....p;#entry1237054

I seem to remember a way of making money using stamps. Buy as many stamps as you can afford but make sure they are the ones stating '1st' on them rather than the cash value and then when they've gone up in price by a penny or two you can use use them to buy things with and get more for your money. Of course you are talking a hell of a lot of stamps to make it worth while and I'm not sure how long the stamps can be kept for as the longer you keep them the more valuable they become with all the price increases.
