'Boy racer' faces lengthy jail sentence over death

A 21-year-old "boy racer" has been warned he faces a long jail sentence after being found guilty of causing the death of a policewoman in a head-on road accident.

Anthony Antoniou was racing "bumper to bumper" with a friend in the lead-up to the high speed crash that killed 33-year-old Lorna Green, who died after being thrown from a motorbike on which she was a pillion passenger.

Her husband, 36-year-old fire officer Robert Green, who was riding the Suzuki motorcycle, lost both legs in the accident in Mitcham, south London last year.

A jury of nine women and three men at Kingston Crown Court took eight-and-a-half hours to find Antoniou guilty of causing the death of Mrs Green by dangerous driving.

Antoniou's friend, 22-year-old Gavin Delaney-McDermott, of Streatham Vale, south London, who he was accused of racing with, last week pleaded guilty to causing Mrs Green's death by dangerous driving.

Mrs Green's brother Nick Betchley cried "yes" and punched the air as the guilty verdict was read out while other members of her family clasped each other's hands.

Antoniou, of Green Lane, Norbury, south London, threw his hands to his face as the verdict was announced while many of his friends and family in the public gallery broke down in tears.

Some then began to weep uncontrollably as Antoniou slumped in his chair.

I've no sympathy - the bloke sounds like a complete neanderthal and society is undoubtedly better off with him locked up.

Meanwhile, somewhere else somebody has to try to start picking up the pieces.
