Could you tell me the eyesight standards for entry into the police
service for new recruits?
The eyesight standards for new recruits are:
Must not be less than 6/36 both left eye and right eye for unaided
vision.
Must be 6/12 or better in either eye with a binocular vision of 6/6
aided for distance vision. Near sighted vision must be a minimum of 6/9
with both eyes together.
I have had Laser Eye surgery - will I be accepted?
There are recent changes in line with the Home Office which state that
candidates may be accepted 6 weeks after surgery (see below).
I have had Photo Refractive Keratotomy (PRK), will I be accepted?
Yes on if you have had uncomplicated surgery over a year old.
Do you accept Radial Keratotomy?
No, this is a preclusion to the standards.
Do you accept LASIK eye surgery?
Yes, over weeks post operative.
I have a detached retina - can I still join the MPS?
No, this is a preclusion to the standards.
I have a colour deficiency, would that stop me from joining the MPS?
No, there has been a change in the medical standards in
which they no longer test for colour vision. It is only an issue if you
join certain specialist units of the MPS.
What happens on the Day 2 Medical assessment?
You will have a hearing test, vision screen and a lung
function test. Your height and weight will be measured to calculate your
body mass index (BMI).
What are the requirements of the BMI?
You will be put on hold if you fall below 19 or above 30. There may be
the option to use a body fat testing machine if you are marginally
outside this range.
I have epilepsy can I still join the MPS?
No, this is a preclusion to the Home Office guidelines,
if you have had a proven seizure over the age of 5 years old.
I have asthma can I still join the MPS?
Yes, you will need to complete an asthma questionnaire.
I take steroids for my asthma, will that stop me from joining the MPS?
If you use an inhaler to control your symptoms then we
will accept you, however if you have been admitted to hospital in the
last 5 years or you are currently taking oral steroids then this may
prevent you from joining at this time.
I have recently been diagnosed as having Irritable Bowel Syndrome will
that stop me from joining the MPS?
Yes, this is a preclusion to joining at this stage.
I have high blood pressure will that be a problem for me to join the
MPS?
If your blood pressure is more than 140/90 then the
medical team may need further information from your GP.
I recently ruptured my cruciate ligament in my knee, however it has now
been repaired. Will I still be fit to join the MPS?
Under Home Office Guidelines this is a preclusion to
joining under Home Office Guidelines.
I wear a Hearing Aid, will this stop me from joining the MPS?
Yes, at present this is a preclusion to joining under
Home Office Guidelines.
I have a perforated eardrum, will this stop me from joining the MPS?
Yes, if it still ongoing.
