The overarching purpose of the weekend is to raise the profile of the special constabulary and demonstrate their value in po licing through tackling different issues every year. This year the chosen theme is:\n\nA demonstration of the importance of the Special Constabulary in the Big Society\, through a focus on anti-social behaviour\; the agree d approach being to develop strategies that create lasting relations with both the public and partner organisations.\n\nThis theme was agreed by the Special Constabulary National Consultative Group (SCNCG) after feedback f rom police forces indicated support for an operational theme\, focusing on a high priority area of crime reduction. All police forces are encouraged to plan events for the weekend that support this theme\, highlighting the important role that specials play in local community policing - a key com ponent of Big Society.\n\nDuring the last National Specials Weekend on 6-7 February 2010\, numerous forces undertook initiatives and events in suppo rt of the road policing theme. One initiative that was undertaken by Dorse t Police'\;s Special Constabulary was Operation Asphalt. Dorset'\;s approach combined Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) traffic related behaviour s with the '\;No Excuse'\; campaign (introduced to reduce road casua lties by the education of road users and to increase awareness through the Driver Awareness Scheme (DAS)).\n\nOver the course of the weekend strateg ic locations were focused on across Dorset where speeding and anti-social driving were SNT priorities. Over 50 fixed penalty tickets were issued wit h the majority of drivers being eligible for the DAS.\n\nDedicated traffic specials supported the deployed officers on the day by providing speciali sed support and guidance. Also many probationer specials were involved as this was an excellent learning experience and provided a real opportunity for the specials to interface with the communities they serve.\n\nEncourag ing feedback was received from members of the public\, with a number appro aching officers to thank them for their support.
