well like the title says i'm looking for some professional radios that i can use with my scouts on camps and also for backstage of shows to keep the crew communicating so if anyone has an they are getting rid of or know of some cheap ones anywhere PM me

Depending on the range you need to use them you would be better getting some licence free handsets new - they are not as expensive as traditional UHF & VHF handsets and the key plus point is not having to apply for an pay for annual licenses, plus the initial programming charge to get them retuned to the frequencies on your licence.

E-Bay & anchor surplus are usual places to pick up kit

To be honest, unless you have got a business network set up and licenced by ofcom, you won't get decent range on any readily available radio. What range were you thinking of?

We have just replaced our VHF ones with new UHF, however I dont know where the old ones have been put. I'll have a look tomorrow and get back to you if I find them.

The only problem I can see is that a licence is required to use them, and the frequency you get is only valid for a certain area. This means you would only legally be able to use them in 1 location (I think). You can get Personal Mobile Radios (PMR's) that dont need a licence, but technically they are inferior.

most "shop" PMR's have loads of subchannels.
for example mine, i will normally use on Channel 3.13 for example, never had a cross lines ones, and the range is a few miles so its all good.

i agree steve i have (at this moment in time) 6 binatone PMR radios 3x Icom F22sr and 2 Motorola GP344

the binatones are no good for backstage of shows as they are public frequnceys and i dont have the rest on the same frequencys

Why not use a sub channel on the PMRs? Or get some encrypted ones? Then at least they can use them with the existing comms? I use an Alan456r and some Oregon Scientific ones. Can't fault either.

the ones that i currently have do not have sub-channels

or the kenwood tk3207

I have a pair of the tk3207s around that i dont use, just have to find them.

i've used the digital motos and they were great apart from the black spots. i've also used the GP340 but lost them to the police because they were stolen

Just to clear something up here - Adam is in the Scouts and the Scout Association holds PMR licences to use PMR business frequencies.

I'll have a look for you Adam on Monday, I think I may have what you need (cheap ex council gear)

Indeed I now have Motorola 1x Gp380 1xGP360 2xGP340 2xGP344 1xGM360 all programmed onto the PMR and also the Registered Scout assosiation Frequencies

I know the thread is old but, if you are using these for scouts it might be an idea to talk to your local radio club and start getting people licensed for their Foundation Licence, the course is quick and cheap. I'm sure there's probably a scout badge for it too.
