Hi,

I have my medical for A&S nest week and am a bit confused as on the medical history form it says BMI must be under 27, but on this site several sources suggest it has to be under 30.

So, just wondering which is it? Under 30 or under 27?

Thanks

This really should be a sticky....!

The BMI is calculated by a medical professional. He or she will look at your BMI *and* look at you, they will not just look at the BMI number! It's entirely possible to have a low or a high BMI and still be more than suitable to become a police officer.

Please don't stress about the bmi!

Fingers crossed on that one. From looking at pervious threads it seems it can sometimes vary on the pure difference of who does your medical. *everything crossed*

As it has been mentioned, the Occ Health nurse will not only look at your BMI number, but look at you as an individual.... are you active, fit and healthy....

When i went for my medical assesment 2006 my BMI was over the limt (cant rember what it was) but I am a bodybuilder and i weighed 18.5 Stone at the time, but with a low body fat percentage.... i was way over the BMI limit, the nurse was not going to pass my medical, and she refered me the the FMO (Doctor) he took one look at me and said no problem i will pass your medical....

Elliot, did you see the FMO the same day, or did you have to pop back later on in the month?

I have just been in contact with recruitment, and the BMI for A&S is 27 or under, not 30!

Again, however severely they word that, it is nothing more than a guideline - the final yes/no is up to the nurses who assess you. My BMI is higher than that, and I didn't even get a comment. BMI is a fairly useless measurement, especially, ironically enough, for some of the most effective body types for police officers.

Well that has put my mind at rest quite a lot  I guess it is only a guideline becuase people who are *built* do indeed look the part :prone:

Hi all,

I went to my intorduction evening last night.

The chap running it wasn't really able to say if the fitness test was in or out in Avon & Somerset. He said to me that 3 or 4 months ago it was in but according to this site it isn't.

He wasn't too sure though.

Can anyone tell me what it entails and if they know if it is in or out?

I am quite happy with my fitness and am preparing for training and on the job as it is but just want to know what to expect.

Thanks

Hi,

Although I'm not sure if they will do the fitness test I do know what you should expect -

The fitness test is fairly standard throughout all forces in England and Wales but can vary. Specialist units (Firearms, dog units etc) require a much higher bleep test result.

For Regular and Specials the required levels are ( but could vary) -

Level 5.4 shuttle run (bleep test) - you should expect to run for around 3-4 minutes continuously, increasing your speed with each bleep. This is done between 2 cones placed around 15 metres apart ( or there about).

Push 34 Kgs and Pull 35 Kgs - This is done on a dynamo machine ( sort of an upright rowing machine).

There is loads of info out there on this topic so worth having a browse.

Regards

Mike.

I've just had it reconfirmed just now from Personnel that the fitness test isn't part of the recruitment process.

Also had it confirmed there is no fitness test, very surprised at this and a bit disappointed it was one part of the tests I was looking forward too. Still wouldn't hurt to keep fitness up, just in case that changes again.
Anybody know why they have dropped it?

Depends on your definition of a 'vehicle'.

I've heard a rumour that the force are considering Roller Skates for Specials that can't get a driving course lol

It will have to be 27 or under or you are likely to fail the medical as a few on my group did.

Again, the raw number won't fail you - you can be over, under, or exactly on it and you still might fail, might pass. The occupational health nurse makes the decision, not the number, and s/he will base it on your physique as well as your raw weight. If you're stocky or muscular, BMI may show you as obese, because it can't tell the difference between bone/muscle and fat. Doesn't mean they're going to fail you based on that.

BMI should be under 30, if it's over, you will go on the body fat monitor. I know, I did, and failed first time round..

26 is still less than 27 right

also does that mean if your BMI is within the limits (20-27) assuming that you pass the other tests (Lung Function, Hearing, Sight etc.)
you are in? you could be really unfit!

Wehn I had my medical at Avsompol in May, there was no lung function or hearing tests. I believe anything under 27 is a pass outright.

I had the lung function test because of a previous condition, and I'm a smoker
