An axeman has injured two people in an attack which caused extensive damage to Waltham Abbey in Essex. The incident happened at 1330 GMT on Friday when a man apparently went berserk.

The cost of damage to the abbey's altar, organ and stained glass windows is estimated at £200,000.

Essex Police said a 47-year-old man had been arrested and has been taken to Harlow police station to be questioned.

Linda Jewson, a church warden at Waltham Abbey, told the BBC that a man wielding two axes had entered the building.

Police said two people were hurt in the attack, including a 62-year-old man who suffered serious head and back injuries.
