You get travel money and different sums of cash tax free depending on the hours you do, so 8 hours, you get nearly £14 tax free plus your travel fees. All adds up matey, welcome to sussex and stick your application in mate, you wont be dissapointed! good luck

Yep all the training is done at our finest establishment :prone: within the Lewes HQ

I wouldnt judge things on the "free" travel issues, There is a price to pay with using the "free" facilities (paperwork). I used my warrant the first time last Friday (23/05) to use the bus, cant go into specifics but with the help from traffic/police cctv and the bus cctv I will be sending a notice of intended prosecution to a bus driver.

So it's not always wise to use your warrant to gain these benefits. Even if i didn't use my warrant i would still be issuing the above regardless though.

Welcome to the forum by the way

Unlike some people :prone: , you can usually get around on the buses on your warrant card without having to arrest the driver :D .

Altho to be fair Addi, having used to warrant card for the free travel is irrelevant in your case. However, i take your point that there is a flip side to it and you may have to put your money where you mouth is if something happens; by boarding that bus for 'free' you are saying to the driver that you are there if you need me. I use it and have not had any problems, but am always aware that there may be. I know others that use it and have had to act. Luck of teh draw (give or take a bit of driver discression).

Do full agree with you buddy, i used my card 3 or 4 times during the last couple of days, it just happened that the 1st time i used it i get that.
Saying that, this bus driver obviously forgot i used my warrant card and was on there as a constable

Even if we had paid to use a public service and an incident arose, I am sure each and everyone one of us would act to help defuse and sort out the situation.

yeah but at the same time you dont want a driver usiung the fact your an officer to scare some noisy kids into being quiet.

Other than that, i would concentrate on why you want to become a Special, what YOU can bring to the force and community, rather that what benifits you get.

Do you only get to stay there if you don't live in that area, or is it open to everyone regardless of where you live?

Hi Bec,

before Catthing comes and upsets our fun, have you viewed the SusPol internet site? Click me!

but to your question ALL on the course have the availability to stay at HQ, some do some don't. However, it is encouraged that you stay, you build up friendships and just make a real weekend of it.

Edit: feel free to private message me. :prone:

Hi Bec,

Welcome to the forum, and in particular Welcome to the Sussex Police area of the site.

Thank you for posting your questions about our little part of the police family. I've modified the post topic slightly, because I think this'll make it easier for others to find in the future.

Feel free to quiz the team on here, but for some part of the application process we'll probably refer you to the experts - our team at HQ who really are the experts in the joining process.

In the mean time.... good luck with your application, and if any of us can be of assistance.... you know where to find us.

I'm shocked!

While I do check in here from time to time, its true, I check in most areas of the forum young Addi, and generally you guys are left to get on with things...you behave yourselves much better than other 'force specifics' I could mention, possibly due to the fantastic mini-modding of ROBERTS5671...does anyone know if he's planning on applying to LV to keep the position??

I was happily reading through this thread thinking 'ah, the usual from SusPol...a reasonable question, with sensible answers and a bit of gentle banter', then I go and find a comment from you saying I spoil the fun.

I'm all sad now and am going to go and sit in the corner and cry.

I have a few questions if I may from someone who may be looking to leave his current force,

- Where are SC's asked to do their duties? Solely with NPT, Response, or either dependant on numbers on duty?
- What is the attitude towards SC's in general? Are there some stations which SC's just don't seem to get on, but others are well looked after, or a good overall helpfulness towards the learning?
- How does an SC become independant? PDP (competantcy based)?
- Is there a chance for an outside force SC to come and work with a shift or two to see if its right for them? Either on duty with current force, or as an observer in plains?
- Are SC's restricted in any way as to the types of jobs they can do? Except of course things like firearms and other specialist roles.
- Do all SusPol stations take SC's regularly, or is it very much on a join when a space is created?
- How long is the training? And what kind of topics would you cover that maybe as a BTP SC, I wouldn't have touched on before?

Quite a few questions, but lately I've been slightly dissatisfied with my current force and could consider moving if I felt it would be right for me in learning and coming home feeling like I've really helped a few PC's and helped a few members of public.

Thanks, Moose :prone:

Hi Moose

1) - The force sees us being attached to NPT. However, the more competent you become, the more the force will train you.
2) - The attitude in general... Yes you'll always get that odd PC, Sgt or Insp that may dislike SC's but we are treated exactly the same as regs.
4) - unsure on this one, best speak to HQ to establish if this is suitable.
5) - All suspol stations are capable of having SC's, see below.
3, 6 &7) - The initial training runs over 8 weekends where you reclassify on your staff safety, 1st aid, general law etc and at the end you'll be an attested constable.
After this, you will go through a similar training package to those on the regs intake. You'll also be examined at the same level to those on regs intake as well.
This would normally take about a year to progress to IP status.
As i'm unsure as to what BTP train i can't really comment on the exact differences on the training.

I have been a special for 4 years at Brighton and Hove, I thoroughly enjoy it and mad enough to be joining up. God help those trainers at Uni..... What i tend to do when i come on duty is , grab a free car have a look at the incident queues and take the jobs that i can take from the the regs. Suspol specials are not Peace trained, so unable to take those jobs that require an initial statement. but certainly all the welfare checks, will attend grade 1's to assist etc.

If you were to come to SusPol, where would you be looking to go?

Hope this helps, :prone:
