Hi all, got a small fishpond in the garden with a few goldfish in it, the problem is that i can`t get rid off the weed stuff that keeps growing in it. I keep pulling it out but no matter what i do it just keeps growing back. Iv`e got a 8 watt UV + bio filter which keeps the water nice and clear, ive tried a couple of liquid stuff that they say will help but haven`t done anygood. Any ideas that might help please, not like my other half keeps saying, fill it in,that will cure the problem.

Bleach?

Aren't you supposed to put down some kind of lining in a pond when it's first done to stop weeds and such like growing through?

Could be blanket weed, basically by having fish in a pond you are stocking it with their waste which produces nitrates, you will need a filter box, UV light, pump and so one (expect to pay a fair bit though - £50 and they do need replacing). the other thing is is get a couple of Grass Carp they eat the stuff. On top of that if you can create a separate header pool and keep a few selected plants and water daphnia (basically a little flea like creature that filters the water) - don't put them in the main pond with fish though as they are generally used as fish food.

On top of that you will need to have the electrics for pump and UV light done properly.

Edit: Doh just seen you have a UV/filter, must read thread properly!!!!!

Just be careful what plants you put in.

UV filters on ponds aren't the be all and end all. Make sure that your filter is rated for the size of your pond and then some. The UV just causes algae to clump together and keeps it in suspension, good filtration is needed to remove it.

Also make sure that you clean your filter regularly, its a horrible mucky job but has to be done.

I've used a number of treatments to clear blnaket weed but in all honesty the best way to remove it is manually, used in conjunction with a straw/barley based weed removal product.

the other thing is is get a couple of Grass Carp they eat the stuff.

Do you know how big they get?

Yes but thats because I have two Koi (both of which are ovet two feet long), fish will grow to the size of that pond that can support them.

btw make sure you either put netting or wires over the pond because one day you will look out of your whilst a Heron has breakfast!!!

it won't be an overnight fix, but with a bit of manual labour, regular cleaning of your filter and good old fashioned time it should clear up.

Also make sure that any leaves/grass cuttings that end up in the pond are removed asap
