Anyone Know what Insurance is for a new driver on a BMW 1999 E36 Coupe 318IS?

No idea, but if your considering an E36 as a first car, your head needs testing.

Hugely dependent on so many things. But I bet the premium will cost you at least 2 times the value of the car.

Nothing wrong, very nice motor but as a first car it would kind of be asking for trouble! :)

Well my dad recently gave me his car after my one died.

2000 plate Audi A4 Avant, Quattro, 2.5l V6 TDI (185bhp) - I wasn't going to say no :D

Its literally got every extra available and is so comfortable to drive even if it is a bit old mannish for a 24 year old. Fully comp insurance my premium is £744. But I expect this to drop in Aug when I hit 25 and an extra years no claims.

I love the acceleration on this car the Torque it puts down is just immense. Considering I was driving a 1.6l 105bhp focus I am sooo Happy :D

I love the wood interior too :D Not sure if I want to change this or add any internal upgrades to get more power yet.

I have the 2.5 v6 tdi in my Psst, lovely engine except a mahoosive turbo lag, being as the turbo's between the two banks, which means I drive it more like a petrol.

I;m looking at changing to a 58 or newer Accord estate, the 2.2 DTech and chipping it. It's got every toy under the sun but under powered for the weight, 1600kg. Chips to around 200bhp with plenty extra torques :)

The car salesman didn't take me seriously when I went in: young blonde lass walks in and says "I'm looking for a family wagon, so estate or large hatchback, needs to be decent specc'ed, and must be BIG and POWERFUL." "What about this nice A6 1.9tdi?" "Nah, not powerful enough." :s They were offering lower spec than the Pst as if I should grateful! Oh well, settled on the Accord without his help!

And I have a Morris Minor, she's lovely!

Peugeot 306 Rallye 2.0L 16v

167BHP and weighs just over 1100kg

0-62 6.8 Seconds

This is my second car and it drives wonderful! Straight line speed is good for a 13 year old hatch, but the B roads is it's strong point.

It's standard at the moment but at some point this year I plan on making some additions and make it a weekend toy.

I just noticed this thread!

I'm very lucky to have a good mate that's a car enthusiast! He as a lot of cars that i've been lucky enough to  have been in! Lamborghini superleggera and  gallardo, aston martin, ferrari 599 and 360, a jag xj220 and a porsche 911 turbo. For car geeks like me, he's the perfect mate :p

MINI Cooper S for me. Had it a few years now and don't want to part from it, even though I need something more practical!! Got it as my BMW 535 Sport was just to expensive to run. I test drove this and it reminded my of my old Fiat Uno Turbo that I had when I was 19. Made me grin from ear to ear! Custom roof decal and bonnet stripes, Milltek exhaust which sounds great as the Cooper S had a tendency to pop and bang on over run, and a Dave.F cold air intake to make the most of the supercharger whine! At some point I'll probably get round to fitting a 17% pully and uprating the intercooler but for now it suits me.

Well my little MINI has now been sold. I wanted something bigger and more economical. So I bought a Impreza........ well it met 50% of the criteria I was looking for!!!! :) :)

'55 plate, with a UK300 spoiler. Totally standard apart from the Prodrive Performace Pack which takes it up to 261bhp from the standard 225bhp. And it goes. And goes, and goes!!! I was originally going to get a Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Quattro, however it it broke down before it even left the forecourt. I was always a bit sceptical about Imprezas and wasn't sure they lived up to the hype, but since driving one I'm certainly not dissapointed. Really good drivers car.

My Car History:

1.0l 2001 Vauxhall Corsa
3.2l 1995 Jaguar XJ6
1.6l 2009 Renault Megane

The Handover Team at AvailableCar couldn't believe it when I walked in to collect the new car. He did a double take of me and the paperwork and even said "I think we might have the wrong paperwork pack for you. This one says you should be giving us a Jaguar XJ6"

His face dropped when I said "Nope, thats the right paperwork..."

Bit of a jump from a Corsa to a XJ6!  Bet it was lovely to drive (the Jag, not the Corsa!).

I've had a;

2001 Fiat Punto 1.2

2001 Ford Focus TDDi 1.8

1997 BMW 528i 2.8

Sold the BMW and just got a bike now.  A Jag is on the list of cars I would like to own.

It was rather nice

My corsa needed £450 of repairs after failing its MoT

My Training Manager was selling the Jag for £500

One of the supervisors does up cars as a hobby and offered £250 for the corsa and he would do the repairs himself.

So - £450 to fix the corsa or £250 (net) for the Jag....

Was REALLY nice to drive and I would have loved to have kept it.

I drive a 106 GTI which I am head over heels in love with.

I originally had a 1.1 106

Then moved onto a Renault Megane Coupe (a horrible thing that made me lose interest in cars)

Then I decided I'd try to a 106 GTI to see if I could get some of the spark back. It's such a brilliant car and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it, like a little go kart, It has 126 bhp/ton so not massivelly powerful but quicker than the vast majority of cars on the road.

A couple of mates who've drove it want it after I move on but it's going to the grave with me. It's not worth much at all so if the time came that I absolutely needed a different car for MPG/practicality I'd either convert it to a rally/track car or gift it to a friend who has helped me with it, on the basis that he can't sell it!

For some reason I find a lot of new cars nice but none of them really get me going. I find the original fiat 500, mini, beetle etc to be far more interesting than their recent incarnations.

Andituk is a user on here who is also at my station who has a very nice old shape impreza which i admire.

I'm having to sell my ST24 now :(  I was doing 1200 miles a month and with it was costing me an absolute fortune to keep it fuelled with it returning about 28mpg at absolute best :(

The head gasket went on it about 18 months ago, I only noticed because I was doing an oil change and saw a black trickle on the rear cylinder head.  I then went and did a 400 mile round trip in it and it was fine, but I thought I'd used all my luck up so I took it off the road and sorted it out.  Whilst it was being done I did a few modifications which pushed it up from 170 to probably in excess of 200bhp, I never had it remapped/dynoed.

The full spec is:

ST200 inlet manifold

ST200 throttle body

ST200 airbox with K&N panel filter

Toyosports tubular exhaust headers

Toyosports high flow y-pipe

ST220 DMD balanced crankshaft pulley

Eibach Pro sports springs

Powerflex poly ARB bushes front and rear

Ford Mondeo ST220 front calipers and Ford Focus ST170 300mm cross drilled/grooved front discs with EBC greenstuff pads

ST200 front ARB droplinks

Custom rear ARB droplinks (Mitsubishi GTO twin turbo bushes on Ford Granada links)

Deleted EGR valve system

Skimmed cylinder heads (increased CR from 9.7 to 10.0)

It sounds absolutely superb and goes very well.  It's quicker both in a straight line and round the corners than our Volvo XC70 area cars (chipped to 240bhp) though they are auto transmission and 4WD.

Here are a few pics I took whilst working on it:

DSC00862.jpg

Removing the valves - all 24 took a long time!

Repainted inlet manifold in satin black engine enamel

P5180697.jpg

Bank 1 lambda sensor is dead!

My plan is to wait a few years when I've saved a bit more money and a few of my investments mature then buy an old or modern classic that I can restore and maintain.  I'm probably gonna consider a Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4 door RWD but they are appreciating rapidly and I might not be able to afford one.  Failing that it might be something Japanese like an old Impreza turbo or possibly even an Integra Type-R but I do love my Fords.

No idea, but if your considering an E36 as a first car, your head needs testing.

Good advice, my brother did that (after riding fast bikes for a long time) and thought he was superman, he got an E36 323 coupe and put it sideways into a ditch before he'd even passed his test.

Must be difficult to bring yourself to sell when you've done so much to it! What will you be replacing it with?

Haha I know, the last few in that list have reasons behind it.

I would love an Audi or VW but just can't afford it. That's what put me into Alfas. Good spec and great driving experience on the cheap.

The Kia was awful but I needed a 4x4 quickly and cheaply.
Anything French in the list wasn't great either.
