What kind of things do they do in the medical?

To be honest i think i am pretty healthy (other than a bit of baby weight left to shift!) but it would be nice to know what to expect- medical is on Thurs 6th Dec.

Thanking you kindly

You'll sit in a soundproof box to have your hearing tested, and you'll have your eyes checked using a device that looks like a pair of binoculars. Then you'll be asked to do basic mobility tests (how far you can move your arms, can you touch your toes, etc), and you'll also take a lung function test (looks like a breath test machine - you just take a deep breath and blow for as long as you can).

Finally you get to pee in a cup!

Yep, I missed it first time too :saint:

When you go in the the so called soundproof box, make sure they close the door properly!
When I started mine, all I could hear was the doctor and nurse having a conversation
None of it is anything to worry about at all. I was on the border line on the LFT's but the doc decided it was ok, so here I am

You lot weren't joking about trying to find it- what a maze! Unfortunately I have to go back too- they didn't have any pee pots left for drugs screening!

Same here, how did you do? the nurse said my results looked good to her but didn't want to say for certain as it was ultimately the Doctors decision.
The map that they gave us was about 10 years old i am sure as it didn't taken in to concideration the new road layout in poundbury  Ah well all done now... oh wait we have to go pee in another pot yet! fun fun fun! :saint:

Hi Lauryn all fine for me cheers, even managed 96% on the lung thing on 12 B n H gold a day! Who says smoking kills...

Wasn't a fan of the sound proof box- could hear the beeps fine but the creaky earphones didn't help!

Oh and I NEVER want to walk past the receptionist with a pot of my own pee EVER again!

Hey guys, sorry to bring this thread back but i thought it would be better than creating a new one. You mentioned being able to touch your toes etc, if you can't touch your toes, do you fail? Because i certainly can't even though im sporty and young. :smiley_offtopic:

I guess the lung function test should be fine as i don't smoke.

Also, is it possible to have an online eye test before hand to check for yourself or any other way maybe? (may sound silly but worth a try)

Don't worry about not being able to touch your toes, I can't. It's basically to show that you have a full range of spinal movement and can maintain balance while doing so. Touching your ear with your elbow was more difficult though (joke).

The eye test uses a machine which you look into rather than the traditional snellen chart which has letters of dimishing size on rows. It covers colour blidness, depth perception, peripheral vision and general visual acuity. It is perhaps worth going to say spec savers and getting an eye test first if you think you may have problems.

Well its funny because the other day i was talking to a few friends and for some odd reason, i asked them if they could read what was on the board from about 15 metres away and they could. It was quite small, i couldn't and i was shocked!

I don't wear glasses but i am worried about the eye test, maybe your right. I shall go down there and see whats going on. haha

Talking about all this and i haven't even passed the PIRT, i guess its good to know everything in advance!

Thanks again.

Hi Guys/Gals,
Just to say thanks for the interview advice, I PASSED my PIRT and Interview.
I have my medical in 3 weeks and I am just wondering , I have slight Asthma and i am a little worried about the lung function test.
How long do I have to blow in the machine for?
Does anybody know what the pass mark is for this test?

Regards

JP

Have a look at this thread (one of yours!) - I've no idea what the pass mark is, but from what you've said I don't think you'll have a huge problem with it.

Hi JP,

I have mild Asthma and also smoke (I know I know) and passed the lung function test with flying colours. Don't worry, you'll be fine.

You take a deep breath, then blow into a tube connected to a box for as long and as hard as you can. Once you've done blowing, a little piece of paper prints out what your lung capacity is, and the Occy Health bod will either ask you to have another go or move on to the next test (eyes, hearing, drugs, whatever). That's pretty much it!
