Edit: Looks like OHU have mucked up. Apparently they never passed me as medically fit, and I'm now awaiting a phone call from them to find out what is wrong. Which is quite annoying because I passed the hearing re-test (that's what they said) and everything else, the only things I didn't hear about were the results of the urine test (I had nothing suspect in my body!) and the result of a letter from my GP regarding a previous medical issue, which shouldn't have been a problem. That's really a bit of a downer on the whole thing at the moment.

Well done on passing the fitness.
As per OHU, I had similar probs, but this was prior to the fitness test.
Best advice is to stick by your guns and be prepared to wait.
PM if you want further info.
All the best

Thanks.

I had a word with OHU today, partly because I had to pass my mobile number onto them as I was away from any landlines all day (and tomorrow) but also to gather a bit more info. From what they told me, I hadn't failed the medical (I'd already failed, retaken and passed a hearing test) but there is something they want to check, so I'm assuming it's down to the previous medical history. They're hoping to resolve it soon as recruitment still want me in for the March intake. I guess waiting isn't going to hurt, this is going on 2 and a half years for me to get this far!

This should have been dealt with prior to the fitness test too, but like I say, they made an error. At least on the plus side, get this out of the way and that's it all over.

Everyone..

I was down at the local station the other day discussing what will happen once i get into the special's. I was wanting to work quite a lot of hours at first, you know.. so i can absorb as much experience as i can , to avoid making myself seem so much of a 'rookie' for months and months. Ellon's station was saying they could only do so much however they mentioned that Inverurie would bite my arm off if i offered some help.. I mentioned this to a friend and he suggested that inverurie has turned into a bit of a rough place. Is this true? Would any of you say it's bad.. and if so, would it be bad to advise me to go out there and lend a hand. What do you think?. I rather liked inverurie last time i was there (i don't get out much lol) but i suppose they do have alot of 'ned drivers' who are all probably on drugs. Is it a town that turns bad at night? lol.
anyways i geuss im just wondering if it would be worth my while.. because i could just as easy sit tight in ellon and enjoy our quiet town. (as far as im aware anyways). Are any of you based in inverurie .. should i come help you out?

Must admit that I've not been in Inverurie in a while but it never seemed that bad. Mind you, Tesco there did stop opening 24 hours as a result of trouble

And I've finally heard back from OHU. The issue is nothing major whatsoever, so I'm making an appointment to go in next week (hopefully) to get it resolved.

The rougher the place the better to work.. you'll get more experiance that way.. I used to work in Peterhead as a special, and it was quite similar to inverurie in size. Every weekend was busy in one way or another. Never been to Inverurie for a night out but it seemed not too bad through the day... Suppose they get alot of drunk teuchters (used to be one  ) at the weekends. We used to flick through the mainset now and again and it always seemed busy out there... If its a job your thinking of applying for later on then the busier place you work the better.

Excellent! I've been given the all clear by OHU now, so a March start date is still hopefully on the table. I tell you, it's a big weight off my mind! (as long as there's no more "slip-ups")

you should read this. I just found it on the internet, its the story about what really happened to the police in edinburgh during the G8 Summit Carnival held there. It's an interesting read. The english wasn't up to a high shakespearan standard or anything but it is what you expect from reporters.

Here is a link. I hope it works.. im not too sure if im meant to add any tags or anything ill try my best to work it out.

hope you enjoy the read.

Cheers!

Waiting...yes, that's what it's all about. As a recruitment officer once said to me, "Patience is a virtue". It took over 4 weeks for them to get back to me after receiving my application, so hang with it. I'm not too sure how fast recruitment for the special constabulary here takes, but I would think you'd be looking at somewhere in the region of 3-4 months depending on the intakes.

I can't say where I'm going, bear in mind that I'm going through the motions of joining the full-time lot, it's going to be up to them where I get stationed. I've asked to be stationed within reasonable distance of where I stay (Westhill, though I don't want to be stationed there!) but like I say, they have the final say.

I will need to phone recruitment later, come to think of it, to see if I'm still on the March intake and to see if I should hand in my notice to work...

Thanks for the tip Queeg, im just soo excited because i know deep inside im going to really love this job. I mean it's just something soo productive to do with my time. Now that i've applied time can't move fast enough for me. My university work seems to be paying off though... everything in my life seems to be motivated in the same way. It's all heading toward the same goal.
Thanks.
so ive got 3 more weeks to wait then before i have to get curious about why i haven't heard anything. Then (if lucky) it'll only probably be about 2 more months before i am in. =)

Excellent!!!

I'll hopefully see you then.

I didn't see anyone from N. Ireland on any of my selection days, but I'm sure we'll catch each other down there...

I missed out on the Feb intake due to certain circumstances but I'm not too worried either, the March intake suits me a lot better, a lot less loose ends to tie up that way.

Like I say, I'll be sure to look out for you!

I am a late starter, everyone else from my selection days is either at Tulliallan now or due to start on 12th Feb so I am the last from that lot to join.

Have you had your uniform fitting yet ?

Not yet I haven't. I only just received my "all clear" phone call on Thursday and they've said it'll probably be a while before anything happens due to the February intake being processed.

I'm sure uniform fitting etc. will all happen in the next couple of weeks though just after the Feb intake has been sorted. I'm happy enough to wait for now.

All those on my Feb intake have been through everything now. They got informed of the Division they got posted to about a week ago - something I will need to know failrly quickly so I can hunt for a Apt or something. I am going to be living in Tulliallan for most of the course and Nelson Street until I find out the exact Station I will be working from.

Kinda glad I have a bit more time left before starting as there is alot to do !

That's what I'm looking for, is accommodation. I'm right on the doorstep of Aberdeen division, a good chunk of South Aberdeenshire is easily driveable, North Aberdeenshire is starting to push things commuting wise and Moray will definitely require a move for me. I've intimated my preferences to them but obviously the final say lies with the force and due to me having "no ties" (well, I've got 2 in my wardrobe... ) I'm one of the people who's more likely to be shifted. It's not really an issue though, I'm prepared for that happening.

I'm quite happy for the extra time as well, just for tying up loose ends if anything! Most things are sorted, I leave work less than 4 weeks from now (well, officially I finish on the 11th but I'm using up all my annual leave before then).

I'm just thinking though, I wonder if anyone from my selection days made the February intake as they were trying to rush us through to make it but due to the whole OHU issue it didn't happen for 2 of us (that I know of).

On the Assessment day we were given 'dream sheets', I asked for Aberdeen City as first choice and North Aberdeenshire as second choice. I am hoping for North Aberdeenshire as property seems to be more affordable in those parts. Having been shopping around for somewhere in the last few weeks, Aberdeen City is well expensive !!

I really just asked for anywhere within a 20 mile radius of Westhill for ease of commuting but not Westhill itself (been advised by a few officers that you're better working outwith your home town)

Aberdeen isn't too bad if you're prepared to live in some of the older tenement-style buildings just to the west of the city centre or Torry. I'm certainly looking at that option, 1 bed flats in the likes of Torry aren't too pricey and to be honest that'll do the likes of me. N. Aberdeenshire isn't too bad either, Peterhead & Fraserburgh both have quite affordable parts and even parts of Banff and Turriff aren't too bad pricewise.

I can't remember if we had "dream sheets" but we were presented with a simple form with a box to fill in, if we so desired.

It depends where you live in Torry. There's bits of it I wouldn't live in, but the parts closer to the river have always seemed fine to me.

Definately going to do some research before I commit to anything. Initially I will be staying at Nelson Street for week 1, then staying at Tulliallan throughout the 15 weeks before returning to Nelson Street to stay for the final 3 weeks of training. I am hoping by that stage I will know what Station I am getting and will have organised digs by then.

Best thing to do really. We'll find out our postings in the not-too-distant future anyhow, so like you say, that's probably the better time to organise digs.

It's a lot to think about!
