No particular reason for asking, just curious.

I was reading through a few posts drawing comparisons with the work that SC's do on the mainland and what we as part-time Con's do in N. Ireland. All seems pretty similar by and large, i.e. YCA's & general neighbourhood type beats etc.

Just as a matter of interest, to what extent do SC's get used for driving duties ? We are currently experiencing a rather large influx of new part-timers but the numbers of licensed P/T drivers has become depleted as they qualified at the height of the troubles when all hands were on decks and many have retired but no-one that I know of has been trained in my time of 13 years. If there are any recently qualified police drivers out there, how long did your training take and what types of vehicles are you qualified to drive ?

One last point, I have got to hand it to SC's who do the work that you do without proper recompense. In my opinion, expenses do not cover for the work that you do and the situations in which you regulary find yourselves. I get over £10/hr gross and over the past number of years would have been earning between £4k and £5k. While I feel that the work I do is worthwhile, I don'yt think I would contemplate having bottles, bricks etc thrown at me for expenses.

By the way, great site.
