Hello fellow Merseyside officers.

Over the last few weeks I have been approached by small number of people in Merseyside Police asking questions about this site. Mostly the questions were simply, 'what sort of stuff is posted?' and 'People might think it it the opinion of the service, not the indevidual'.

So... Here is the solution, a private forum. This has been set up to day at significant cost to myself. Seriously, this has cost me personally £30 in an attempt to make things run smoother in the organisation and allow people to discuss matters in a completely private forum.

How to get in...

Well, those people who I know are already serving in Merseyside will expect a PM with the password in the next day or so. Those whom I do not know, need to photocopy their warrant card, and write on your collar number, station you work from and (most importantly) your ID on this site. This will then need to be sent to Bromborough Police Station through internal post for my attention, Peter Elliott, S/Con 0533.

On receipt of your details, I will then PM your password.

Please note that the three 'mini-moderators' are myself, TheInspector and AnotherConstable, however this private forum will be the responsability of all of us to keep private, which is why only SERVING police officers or support staff on Merseyside Police will be granted access.

I look forward to speaking with you all privately...

PS: Ignore the Hampshire Specials bit, I am getting that changed.

Can a Mod please pin this for a couple of days please?

I wouldn't suggets to anyone that they photocopy their warrant card.

There must be other ways you can veryify them as they will no doubt work for the same force as you.

I would also like to state that Policespecials.com or the Mods have no part in this whatsoever

No, while to do have to register for certain private areas, most of the site is viewable to all.

I've pinned the topic, and edited the topic title to reflect this.

I would strongly suggest that another method of granting access to the private site is arranged other than by having people photocopying their warrant card which is not safe. Presumably if someone is using internal mail, they work for the force and this should suffice for contact to be made in the first instance, the password could then be returned by internal mail to the officers nick, thus verifying who they are when they receive it.

Only a suggestion.

I can see major flaws in your plan.

OK so you want a private forum for serving Merpol SC's fair enough but to be fair I think you have probably gone about this rather cack handedly.

So this site is only going to be viewed by SC's or is it open to PC's and Support Staff as well?

If it is not then bet your life you will get complaints, and if you have open Force access then people might not want to use it in case senior officers are monitoring it.

If you really need a dedicated website then I suggest you look at the btpspecials website, it is divided into three parts 1. Open access to all including MOP 2. Access only to all BTP Officers and Support staff 3. Access for SC's only (ID checked via Personnel).

All credit due to the btpspecials site owner Neill for getting and keeping it running (no mean feat!) its not for the faint hearted or on a whim.

and just to back up what Batfink said the Photocopy ID idea is stupid and anyone silly enough to either instigate or go along with such an idea (in any Force) should really consider whether the Police is for them.

Nearly forgot to say that no private forum area is secure as anything may be copied and passed on and used in evidence against you - just remember that.

Considering the limitations of the site, it seems we have done all that is reasonable to make some of our discussions private.

As you can see by previous posts, the verification is a lotus notes email through the internal system, so they would be employed by Merseyside, be it Regular, Special or civilian. While I agree it isn't perfect, it will suffice for the purpose it was created.

The private area has been running for two months with out a hitch and I can assure you there has been nothing posted that would be required 'as evidence', however as it is also frequented by site moderators they would also be able to confirm this. There are other private forum's on this site, no doubt they are for similar reasons as ours.

So please, rather than attempting to pick faults in my attempts to make my colleagues postings more private, can we discuss some real policing matters elsewere? Thankyou.

It wasn't so obvious that you were having a private forum on here, which incidentally gets away from any arguments about who can and can't gain access so that problem is sorted.

What I was refering to was if you had gone the full hog and set up a dedicated site elsewhere, that I believe would have caused some headaches.

As long as you understand nothing is privacy can't be guaranteed.

Again, something I would not be doing is copying my warrant card, however theinspector and anotherconstable can easily verify who I am, one of them is my big brother.

Peter,

a further suggestion which should be safer than copying warrant cards.

Serving Merpol officers can send you an email on the force email. This verifies them as a serving officer, and acts as an audit trail. You can then return the password on an email sent back to that officer.

Thoughts?

As it's been a while since we changed the password and you never know who's out there looking in, please send a PM to either myself or Deputy Dewey with your five digit 'open door' or novel number to get the new password which will take effect from

10th November 2009.
