Anything about Planes, Airports and such can be posted here.
First up.
US Navy finally retires the F14 Tomcat
The famous Jolly Roger Squadron (sqn) has become the last USN sqn to fly the F14 Tomcat, the plane made famous in the film Topgun has been replaced by the already in service F18 Hornet, has ben in service for nearly 30 years.
Sales of the plane were cripled in 1979 due to the Iranian revolution (the Iranian Air Force had previously taken delivery of the aircraft) and fears that the Radar and other technological secrets had been compromised.
The Phonenix long range missile system was taken out of service on the aircraft a few years ago leaving the Tomcat with short range Sidewinder missiles.
Many people considered the F14 to be the Navy eqv to the F15 Eagle (USAF - the one in which Jeremy Clarkson threw up in!)..

Sure the F-14 and F-15 and to a degree the F-16 (Fighting Falcon) were supreme craft and I've always admired the F-14 Tomcat.
I even saw a squadron of F-111s fly past once at an Air Day. Almost silently they swished past; naively I thought, 'Wow, such design with engine noise so minimal' when, some seconds later, a rumbling came and grew to incredible volume. Hangars shook and children began to cry - I was tempted to join them.
Ultimate passenger? The Boeing 747 without a shadow.

Cosseted in the luxurious surroundings of an Emirates A340 First Class suite, you'll find that your every need has been anticipated. Comfort and convenience are the watchwords here, with everything you could need for an enjoyable journey right at your fingertips.
From the supreme comfort of your leather seat, which at the press of a button can be converted to a fully-flat bed, everything you might need is within your reach. An advanced hand-held mode controller allows you to personalise your experience, from ordering a meal to selecting a movie. A personal mini-bar is on hand should you require refreshment. While for refreshment of a different kind, there is even an inbuilt vanity stand with illuminated mirror.
Your privacy is, of course, paramount. And so your mode controller also allows you to close the doors to your suite, and to raise and lower a privacy screen to separate your from your fellow travellers.
Should you require the attention of one of our award-winning crew - think of it, perhaps, as room service - they too are just the press of a button away.

Yes. Sorry but it does. You'll be standing at the edges of airfields with hairy ears, a pair of binoculars dangling around your neck, spouting any boring rubbish from DIY to how many rivets a B-17 had whilst listening intently to dreadfully dull pilot and control tower conversations before you know it.I admit to doing a project on the Canberra at school... does that count?

Thought I'd provide a (rather tenuous) link between PS.com and aviation!

They're all real. Its (unofficially) the most travelled mug in PS.com. You can follow its exploits (and those of its successor after being dropped and smashing at Oslo airport) in the Power User's "Well Travelled Mug" section.
thats well good! one question how the hell did you get it in a cockpit and on an engine? Do you wokr in aviation?

No I'm just a frequent business flyer but my wife is a Cabin Services Director on a large European airline and my brother an Aircraft Engineering Manager for a UK airline (he borrowed the mug for a day for the flight deck and engine shots). All the others are my pics as the missus won't go near the mug as she thinks I'm mad as do my work colleagues!

have you been to the fleet air arm museum, what a great day out, even my missusAh but I think for ultimate, all-round fighter aeroplane it's got to be the McDonnell Phantom II. Some nations still fly them although the RAF got rid of theirs some years ago, the Royal Navy some years before that. I am very keen on Royal Naval aviation, especially from the late 60s to the end of 892's Phantoms in the late 70s/early 80s.

remember 1982 and our cheeky argie friends...
the very capable supersonic mirage 111 was no match for royal navy sea harriers, not one was lost in air to air dogfights

If I could just commend to you the Emirates first class cabin on the Airbus A340 with the full sliding door private area... overhead lockers removed to provide full headroom and all the pampering you could ever wish for
