This was mentioned at the Labour Party Conference by Bono and more recently in the Vicar Of Dibley and of course Live Aid/Band Aid

I feel this is an important issue and with Britain presiding over G8 this time around I think it is important that the politicans see how prominent an issue we consider this.

More information can be found here Make Poverty History

With that said I would like to launch this a virtual white band. If you agree I urge you to get a whiteband as I have. However if LV is willing I would like anyone who supports this to post so here. A simply yes will do, if you dont then there is no need to post as such. I will then get the link to this page and email it so that it can be seen how even online communities see this as an important issue.

Thank You

As police officers we are often seen as the leaders in the communities and the ones who set the standard of all the things we hold dear as people.

As such I think something like this should be supported by police officers.

Thank you to all who have supported thus far. Just to reitterate, this link will be sent with a summary of the number of people here who support the scheme. The idea is to make politicians see how important the people see this issue and is being replicated in petitions, letters, cards and the people wearing the bands.

Sorry Daz, I believe this is a political issue and as such the Police should be impartial and not get involved in politics.
And anyway shouldn't we erradicate poverty in our own country first before anywhere else?

The only politics at work here is that it is the politicians namely Brown and Blair who can make this happen and that the public are being asked to show their support so that it will be given a higher priority at the G8 although with recent events it wont be quite the top priority. It is actually a coaltion of some of the top charities and aid working organisations as well as quite a few celebrities.

This wristband thing, is quite the IN thing at the moment. Just seems that they are coming out for everything at the moment.

Ones I have heard of are:
Blue
Yellow
White
Black & White
Pink
Red

Just to clear something up this thread was originally posted in the Policing General Discussion area (which is where it was when I commented on it - I don't have a problem with it (the subject) down here in the proper area - why no Mods comment about it being moved?).

Anyway wrist bands a bit "Vicky wots-her name" from Little Britain don't you think, why do we have to have these "status symbols" of solidarity? much better to actually give money directly unless your your really into self promotion and brown tongues that this

Just a little bit of plastic that will one day just be another piece of rubbish in the gutter blighting our environment.

People are much more willing to buy these "status symbols" than they are to give without recognition - and whatever reason people buy them for, all the money still goes to a just cause, at the end of the day....

I think it's quite a good bit of marketing by the charities who have introduced these bands - get celebs to wear them, making the bands a fashion accessory, getting more people to buy them - it all adds up to more money for the impoverished, whichever way you look at it.

Well its hardly a 'Feed the/Run the World' T shirt is it?

Infact its not that far removed from a plastic wrist restraint.

Like I said got no probs with giving just question peoples motives, poverty isn't trendy and despite what most people think (like most things) unless you have been there don't even try and be patronisng to those that are. Some of the richest people in the UK live streets away from the poorest but they might as wellas be on different planets.

Another thought if it wasn't for the publicity surrounding the white bands, then if I had seen one of these then I would have wondered what hospital the wearer had escaped from.

As they do, very much look like 'patient tags', don't they.

I do despair sometimes, this is all in aid of a good cause, yet there is always someone who has to put it down, moan, and complain.

The band is proving far more effective than any cheap and tacky t-shirt, therefore rasing more money, which is surely only a good thing?

If you visit the official web site at

http://www.makepover...y.org/home.html

At the bottom of the page is a small script which can be added to your web page. This is a topic that I support, and trust that this campaign will show the level of public support for this worthwhile aim. I have added it to several of my sites.
