When the Romans invaded the British Isles they conquered most of the celts up to Midlothian at one point, Scotand and Ireland didn't exsist the Romans referred to them as Caledonia and Hiberina respectively, the term Britain comes from a reference made by a scholar years before the invasion when the place was referred to as the Prettanic Islands (slight corruption to Britannia).
Between the time the Romans left and the Saxon Chronicles were written the islands were invaded by a diverse range of continental tribes including:
Continental celts, Picts, Scots, English (yes they really exsisted back then) Danes, Vikings, Angles (from Holstein in Germany) and finally Saxons (yes from Saxony).
bearing in mind that the time between most of Britain being part of the Roman Empire to the Norman Conquest was the best part of 800-900 years you may find it strange that England didn't really exsist until Saxon times when separate kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia, Northumbria and Anglia came together.
Despite this diverse mix of people and that modern day Brits (including English) have blood lines stretching back to Wales, Scotland & Ireland most of the world still insists on calling anyone English - Anglo Saxon.
Why? that term was relevant a 1000 years ago but definately not now.

LORETTA: And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now, Reg.
FRANCIS: Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this.
