I was on duty on Friday with our new AO, Derek and my two fellow new recruits, Esther and Lee.
We had a busy night and having our new AO with us was excellent. I did my first person search and we took some details of nuisance youths. Also started a pursuit on a vehicle which failed to stop - The Land Rover could not keep up the chase - worst luck. During the shift we swapped over from the Land Rover to a van.
At 1am we headed back to the station and apart from Derek we were all going to finish for the night. At the last minute Lee and Esther had a change of heart and said they would do a couple of hours longer. The AO and I had just put our kit in the locker when we heard that Derek had been in a RTC. So the AO and a regular quickly got over to the scene. I decided I could not go home without checking that my colleagues were OK so I went to the scene too.
It was right outside the Casino in Rochester and the road was blocked off with PC's everywhere including plain clothes.
A car had come out from the Casino car park without displaying lights and went straight through a red light into the van that Derek was driving. He was just moving off from the traffic lights.
Esther was in the rear of the van and got thrown forward and had abrasions on her face. Lee had been in the front with Derek and both had been wearing their seat belt, so were unhurt if not a little shocked. As Lee checked to see if Esther was OK, the driver of the other vehicle decided to do a runner and Lee gave chase, eventually getting the guy as he fell on his face.
He was drunk and already disqualified it emerged later so he will have the book thrown at him - serves the idiot right.
Esther is OK if a little bruised and battered and Lee was still full of it when i spoke to him on Saturday. He got his first arrest and got lots of help from some regulars who got to him once the guy had been apprehended. I think they eventually got off about 6/6.30am.
I remember syaing to them to lat me know if anything exciting happened once I left them at 1am - What followed was not what any of us expected.
None of us are in any doubt that Medway is never dull and you never quite know what's rond the corner!!
ouch!
