No you need to have your response permit to have a grade 5 on high performance vehicles
Yeah thats what the reg said,but not allowed to drive response in the vehicle only Grade 5 purposes,if wanted to drive response then would have to drive ordinary Octavia's the CBM variety

Yes the Rangeys do look very impressive,
But are they on a trial basis?
The Specials have a new van on Northern but up until last night i still couldn't find the keys,
Does it sound like DE JA VU Or What?
Ah some of you have no idea how lucky you are!
Response driver trained? New Vans? Access to posh cars... and heres our inspector having to bend over backwards to sort us out a R reg transit with the airwave set taken out... :sad:

I have just passed my grade 5 and have been informed that i can drive any car the has a engine size smaller than a 2500cc diesel or similar in petrol, so the only cars that cannot be driven on a grade 5 are the T5's or similar as these need a performance licence, they are classed as an A on you police driving licence so, the estate cars(cant remember what they are) you CAN drive.
Hope this helps! Even have the paper work if you need to see if Dangerou8?!

It's 2ltr for petrol engines and up to 2.5ltr turbo for diesel, did you do your 4x4 and van as well?, oh it's an advanced not performance and it's a permit not a licence.

You knew what i meant!
No, no 4x4 yet but the local examiner is going to take me out in a few weeks as they are really busy and the guy i had my test with yesterday was short on time so we only did the cars and the vans.

Good point, you also have to think, why would we actually need to take out a traffic car? Its not like you can get involved in a pursuit on a grade 5 or anything?I know a special who is allowed to drive any vehicle including T5's on a Basic Driving Authority. The driving instructor who signs your Basic permit is able, if he sees fit, to tick the top box on the permit which is any petrol vehicle over 2500cc. Having said that this particular special has never been able to take out a traffic car - lets be honest the regulars dare take them out let alone us!
Wouldn't see the point!

Good point but i believe that all vehicles have to be equipt with the basic major routes equiptment.suitable veh for a major route rtc. ie kit, battenburg etc... not all the gpd vehs are ok for this, the 4x4 for example
I know the estate vehicles have everything is as when i was last on we had to shut a slip road.

no as some are NOT suitable for major route work, the 4x4 for example and the Astra's. they may have the kit but are only a short term solution.(best leave it to the experts)Good point but i believe that all vehicles have to be equipt with the basic major routes equiptment.

Major Routes vehicles must have:
- rear red lights;
- full battenburg livery;
- cones and signs;
- clearing up tools: brush, spade etc.;
- first aid equipment.
This rules out the Peugeot Expert vans (not surprisingly!), the Astras (which only have partial battenburg), and the older 4x4s. I believe the brand new 4x4s are appropriately marked?
The Skoda Octavia Estates, Ford Focus Estates and the Vauxhall Zafiras are the most commonly used divisional vehicles on major routes.
Bear in mind that even single carriageways like the A141 are classified as trunk roads and are therefore "major routes".
I was deployed to a job on the A1(M) last week in a Skoda Octavia since all traffic units were off chasing stolen JCBs in Ramsey. After having sat there for nearly an hour protecting the scene, we were relieved by a traffic officer who said that divisional mobiles should never be deployed to motorways. While in an ideal world I would prefer traffic units to be deployed to motorway scenes, this doesn't represent force policy and is the reason why all officers were major routes trained. If we hadn't been sent, nobody else would have been available to do the job.
I am aware that it is possible to get a Grade 5B permit which allows you to drive high-speed vehicles, however I don't think Cambridgeshire has ever actively encouraged Specials to work with traffic - unlike norfolk and suffolk. Mind you, it's a bit pointless being able to drive a traffic car within Grade 5 limitations!
