in M/side we get paid according to how much we do. We all get £30 boot allowance per year (usually paid as a one off but sometimes spread out). Then you get travel expenses from your house to where you work from (usually averages about £4). Finally you get subsistance allowance (officially to pay for meals but you get it even if you don't eat).
less than 2 hours - nothing.
2 hours to 5 hours - £6.83
5 hours to 8 hours - £8 something
8 hours to 12 hours - £12 something
more than 12 hours - £20.85
I normally pick up about £150 to £200 per month.

We used to get subsistance but that was stopped over a year ago and we used to get the cost of travelling by public transport (which was just over £4) but no more. ooh and I cant remember the last time we got boot allowance.

AFAIA, only Special Insps and above can claim milleage allowance.
I was told Special Ch. Insps and above.
So only the Chief Oficer, Spec. Superintendent and the one Spec. Chief Insp. in each area can claim mileage allowance.

We also get mileage and public transport paid for.
Is news that we might introduce paying specials a bounty as is under a pilot in 4 forces. We shall see!!

I have noticed in the past few years that new special recruits seem to harp on about how little money they get from the specials and how it should be more. I wonder how many officers would stay in the job if they abolished the expenses?
I think we should all remember the meaning of the word VOLUNTARY:
FREE,gratuitous,optional,spontaneous,UNPAID,willing. ( The Oxford popular Thesaurus )
So lets forget the monetary gain guys and remember the reason why we joined.
Thanks Chris H.

However, it's not a form of payment. You shouldn't be expecting to make a profit (though undoubtedly many will).
I know for a fact when I was on a 10 hour shift, I would get about £10 for subsistance and yet get 50% off in the Burger King making a full meal something like £2 - therefore £8 profit.
Unless and until any "bounty" payments arrive for Merseyside officers, volunteer and don't lose out. That's the best you should hope for.

£30 per year boot allowance
and if we do 30 mins to 24 hours we get a grand rate of £2.00 per shift not per hour.
And we get nothing else on top of that.

Well we are the poor relations up here at Cleveland. What we get is:
£30 per year boot allowance
and if we do 30 mins to 24 hours we get a grand rate of £2.00 per shift not per hour.
And we get nothing else on top of that.
David Burgess-Joyce who posted above is the Deputy force commandant for Merseyside, and is actively involved with the Home Office on many levels and does tireless work for Specials.
Although he never said "officially" - the Home Office and ACPO state that specials should get expenses as per the 2002 rates. Those are the rates that "TheInspector" also posted in this thread.
If you aren't getting that then there is something seriously wrong - especially when the Specials funding is separate from the main police funding and is provided by the Home Office. You really need to take this up with someone in authority in your force - by which I mean the Chief Officer or something like that.
It may even be worth sending an email to the enquiries address for the Home Office which will give them a little "heads up" on the situation.

I will do and I will let you know the outcome. I have also emailed David Blunket a while ago and Jack straw to see why specials do not get some sort of pay, David Blunket was quite helpful but Jack straw turned around and said that the specials are not like the T.A. or the fire brigade as regards they could be called out at anytime and we carnt but then I asked the question that was the army cadets not a voluntary organisation and did the instructors not get paid for their attendance? To which I got no reply (ummmm I wonder why)David Burgess-Joyce who posted above is the Deputy force commandant for Merseyside, and is actively involved with the Home Office on many levels and does tireless work for Specials.
