One of Kent's most senior female police officers has been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting.

Supt Rachel Adams, 46, has been suspended from duties at Medway police station, where she is area commander.
The allegation is thought to involve items - including cosmetics - believed to be worth around £30 from an Asda store near West Malling.

The offence is alleged to have been committed at Asda, in Alexander Grove, Kings Hill, on Bank Holiday Monday, August 27.

Supt Adams was arrested at her home, in the Maidstone area, and is currently on police bail. She has not been charged.

She has headed Medway police since being appointed in June last year. The job is being filled by a female colleague while the investigation continues.

Supt Adams is vice-chairman of the Medway Community Safety Partnership, but has been temporarily stood down due to her suspension.

The organisation comprises police, council and others, who work together to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.
Supt Adams has previously been deputy area commander in the West Kent area and has been a detective chief inspector in Swale.
When appointed to Medway, she said she wanted to spend the rest of her policing career in the Towns.

The keen runner and skier said: "I come from the military, it is a male-dominated environment, so I can work very well with my male colleagues.

"I enjoying being here already and I'm looking forward to working with the partnerships here."

Cllr Mike O’Brien, chairman of the Medway Community Safety Partnership, said this week: "The role of the vice chair of the Medway Community Safety Partnership is automatically taken on by the police officer who has overall responsibility for policing command in Medway.

"If a person is not currently working in that role, they are unable to sit as the vice chair of the partnership.

"As this is an ongoing policing enquiry, we are unable to comment any further."

A Kent Police spokesman said: "On Monday, August 27 August, a 46-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of theft (shoplifting) in Kings Hill."

Supt Adams was later released on police bail pending further inquiries until October 11.

A senior police officer spoke of her relief today as she was cleared of shoplifting after what she described as a "devastating 12 months".
Kim Molloy was suspended from her post as chief inspector with Nottinghamshire police after she allegedly stole Max Factor Age Renewal foundation make-up worth £12.72 from a Tesco Extra store in Top Valley, Nottingham, in November 2009.
Recorder Peter Joyce, QC, instructed a jury at Derby crown court to find Molloy not guilty and acquit her because the prosecution could not prove she had acted dishonestly.
The judge said it was an act of forgetfulness rather than dishonesty.
In a statement afterwards, Molloy said common sense had prevailed.

it seems bizarre, I'm obviously not in command of the full facts in any case but if I were a juror I'd have great difficulty believing the dishonesty component short of, a long furtive look around before pocketing the item and running from the shop followed by a s.18 which showed a getaway plan involving a fast car and a driver.

That'll teach me to not check the date on the article - it was posted by Inspector Gadget on twitter today, I (wrongly) presumed that it had just been released... D'oh. Although I stand by the fact that it is a weird coincidence... Although having read 'A Fair Cop', by Michael Bunting, my confidence in the decision making processes used by PSD and the CPS when it comes to police officers suspected of offences is somewhat limited.

Probably not that weird: I can't think of many senior male officers that would be interested in makeup from major supermarkets! :new_yummy:

I challenge that remark, that clearly demonstrates a lack of diversity understanding.

Note to self in future must remember to pay for items before leaving shops, I wonder how many other suffered from forgetfulness caught leaving a store with something they have not paid for.

Actually after a 15 hour night shift I once went to tesco beeped all my items through the self service and picked up my bags and walked about 10 steps before realising I hadnt done the paying part and rushed back

Yep, in BTP I was grabbing my refs from Tesco express when a grade 1 came out at the tube station I had just left...off I trotted at some speed and about 50 metres down the road I realised I still had a sausage roll in my hand. I went and dealt with the 'staff assault' (someone said boo to a revenue inspector.) Upon my return to Tescos I explained and apologised to the security guard and went to pay. He seemed like he couldnt have cared less and actually seemed to take my interruption of his daydream as an affront.

Definately done this before at self scan after 26 hours awake between day job and policing during last years disorder. Only twigged when I was halfway out the door.
