Indeed - But I am refering here more for Regular Police officers - and also people in their day jobs - like myself. Perhaps this'd be better in 'The Real World'

My reply was aimed at those who were looking to claim using their SC uniform, rather than day jobs.

For any regular officer I'd speak to your pay branch, depending on how big the force is as you might find it's already been sorted by agreement with HMRC.

I'll move this to Real World, as some Specials might qualify for this via their full time jobs too.

Nice find by the way. Posted Image

Met officers MUST NOT apply for this. It's already sorted via our payroll.

Bensonby, not saying your wrong but the op's attachment was on my bocu's weekly newsletter a few weeks ago a few articles under the commanders regular piece. I would hope for it to have been posted on something so wide spread that they were implying that it is ok for us to use/do?

(sorry for any bad grammar I've missed; just finished nights)

there was somethin on AWARE a while back stating officers must not independently apply for it as it was sorted through Logica. Indeed, it shows up as an odd little mathematical mechanism in your April pay packet eat year.

Bensonby is right, if you're a full time Met officer the tax office already have sorted it for you due to the number of officers that qualify.
It was on the intranet and all Fed Reps (should've) sent an 'All Officers' circular Email.

When I joined the regs, I advised to ring to get my tax code changed due to washing my uniform and for federation membership.

This was done by the tax office and I thought nothing more about it till someone at work last week advised me that I was meant to do it every year (ring them). I have tried to ring to ask but no answer.

Anyone know if this is correct?

How much is the Fed membership these days?

The cost of uniform washing must be relatively minimal compared to any tax benefits no?

I've just been given a tax rebate of £260 for the cost of a 2nd Class stamp and many of YOU are owed money too! :new_shades:

As uniformed public servants, you are entitled to an allowance in order to maintain your uniform, however, many are not getting this. Even if you're not in-service anymore (such as myself) you can still claim for up to 5 years worth of expenses. Time for Mr. Taxman to stump up!

I urge all of you to read this and apply - you can even claim for your second job (e.g. if you work for Asda on the shop floor, that is also a "uniform" you are wearing).

My letter simply asked for a cheque for uniform expenses + all my dates of service (Police and Territorial Army).

1 month later and I got a load of tax documents from HMRC... and a lovely looking cheque :)

Careful - SCs might be ineligible for this as they are volunteers. Seems cock-eyed, but that's my understanding.

However, if you have to wear uniform or other mandatory clothing at your day job, you might be able to claim for that. By mandatory, I don't mean the clothes you choose to wear on a daily basis else you'd get nicked for outraging public decency, but the that you'd have to wear in uniform or overalls etc.

I work for HMRC (unfortunately) in my day job and us Specials do not qualify for the tax relief offered to the uniformed services.

However, I can confirm that people who are required to wear uniform for work, e.g. supermarket staff, are eligeable for the aforementioned tax relief.

You can also get it if you don't wear a uniform ie printer. When I was a printer I used to get it even though I didn't wear a uniform.

I thought this option for a rebate had now expired. Probably wrong but it's what I believe I'd heard?

Special Constables CAN claim for uniform expenses IF and ONLY IF they are part of a recognition award scheme which is taxed.

Special Constables in Strathclyde, for example, are taxed on their Recognition Awards and CAN claim this.

Special Constables are volunteers, who usually receive no pay for their police duties. It follows that they have no income against which a FRE deduction can be given. In no circumstances should a Special Constable be given a police officer’s FRE allowance in the PAYE code for their full-time employment.

If, exceptionally, a Special Constable receives a bounty, or some other form of remuneration for their police duties, the police authority should apply PAYE to the payment(s) in the normal way. A FRE allowance can then be given in the code for the Special Constable’s police service employment.
