Isn't it just "Stick/gently roll the relevant appendage as indicated by the computer screen onto the sensory thing"... it's idiot police proof.

Nope. I used to be trained ... but when I left a borough and the system was still locally administered, my login lapsed as I went to multiple custody suites rather than the same one every time.

It's not quite idiot proof... The magic "?" to display the latest list of scanned individuals? The necessity of choosing the person entered by the custody sergeant on NSPIS from the list rather than creating a new one? All the magic tick boxes about immigration stuff?

Not having a login on livescan has never stopped them getting me to do it.

Assuming you
a) have a log in
and
b) can remember your password and username
and
c) if you can't, are able to find someone to reset it for you.

Livescan is pretty idiot proof. If it doesn't like a print it beeps at you as if it's saying "do it properly you idiot."

The hardest part is the rolling of the fingers especially if they are being awkward or they have very faded ridges on their fingers (builders are the worst as their hands are so worn/scarred).

There is no Livescan training. You simply get it and crack on. Usually you log on and someone watches you do it to make sure it is done right. Training complete lol.

Same. No DDOs in my part of the world, and the PCSOs give you a strange look when you,ask for a hand......excus the pun.

yes....but there is some thought as to what the word 'training' constitutes. I'm at Uxbridge tomorrow and will try to put something together ...

I got Livescan training as a special which consisted of watching a DDO do it after getting an account set up by a Livescan manager. It's really quite easy to use and you get used to it. When I first started, DNA was the main one that confused me.

When I return to borough I hope to set something up officially for all/most specials to be Livescan trained and helping them through custody.

Which nick you been to? There's DDOs at both and from my experience what they will do for you very much depends on the skipper and how many DDOs are working

With all due respect, PCSO's shouldn't be in custody, so they probably would be fairly unhelpful there.

Strange to see comments about DDOs not going near livescan. Its the bread and butter of their role pretty much.

I thought the whole idea of a DDO was to free up PCs from custody - book them in, and then go and do the writing whilst the DDOs work their magic.

Indeed, there's a school of thought to suggest that a prisoner is more likely to be compliant with a civilian jailer than they are with the police officer who's just nicked them, simply by the fact that they're as independent as the custody skipper from the actual investigation. If it's been a confrontational arrest from the get go, it does nobody any favours for that to continue inside the custody environment. Once the prisoner is secured, there's a lot of mileage in maintaining the separation between custody and investigation.

That's just an added bonus, custody staff have always been separate from the investigation as it's a PACE guideline. It's also why arresting officers shouldn't do constant watches.
