Police in Dundee seek lost canister of pepper spray

Posted Image

Tayside Police said the CS Spray canister and holder were lost sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Police in Dundee are trying to trace a missing canister of pepper spray.

Tayside Police said the CS Spray canister and holder were lost by an officer on duty in the city on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The force said its effort to find the missing equipment had so far been unsuccessful.

They have asked for anyone who finds the canister, which has the words 'police use only' on it, to hand it in.

A police spokeswoman said: ''Unfortunately the officer was working in different areas of Dundee throughout the night so it's difficult to pin down where he might have lost the canister to one specific area.

Police use only

''The CS spray is a small grey metal canister with a grey top which is around four inches high and once inch in diameter.
"It has the words 'CS incapacitant' on it together with 'Police use only'"

She warned that the spray was flammable and an irritant and asked anyone who had found the canister to return it to a police station.

The spokeswoman added instructions had been given to officers regarding security of equipment.

Pepper spray is classed as an offensive weapon in Scotland and it is illegal to be in possession of it in public.

Some poor officer is in the dog house then. Strange the article didn't mention it's also classed as a firearm.

It's not a firearm... it's covered by the firearms act 1968, but it's not classed as a firearm. It's a prohibited weapon.

:) Apologies! That would explain why then, as it's prohibited under the firearms Act I just assumed it was.

I've been to a job where CS was sprayed through a letterbox after a neighbourhood dispute, it was the real deal (smelt the same and had the same effects as the stuff most of us have on our belts), so it cant be that hard to get hold of if you know where to look. The canister was never found.

I wonder what circumstances it was lost in. I can't imagine it just falling out of a Peter Jones holder or similar.

I've had the entire holder come off before, that's what the lanyard is for, but even that breaks on occasion

I saw some Civvie spray the other day, it look very very similar to a small maglight (or similar) in red, with a little black pish-out-the-way arming system at one end. This was the holder and case of the spray, the insert looked not too dissimilar to a shorter, fatter aerosol can. Obviously they do look different dependant onn make, but KIV folks, they don't always look like ours and can be bought relatively easy. The women i was speaking to got her (3 in total) online.

I had an urge to get sprayed, to see how it compares with our CS/PAVA et al, but not knowing how bad it was etc, didn't really want to experiment on myself... :p

Whilst it is covered under the S.5 Firearms area, I'm unsure as to if this is so in Scotland, so maybe it is just an offensive weapon.

Sounds more like a preemptive news release to me. Before some journalist comes across it and puts spin on it the force is saying "we lost it and if you find it do this."

I'm sure kit goes missing all the time. All it takes is a foot chase, open land search or a roll around for stuff to go missing. As long as you can explain why something is lost, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I can't see someone getting into trouble for losing their CS after drawing it on a guy wielding a knife or the like.

I don't think they'd be too worried if I lost my CS cannister after I drew it on a knife wielding individual. There wouldn't be anything left in it!

The Firearms Act 1968 is used up here too, so CS is a prohibited weapon under sec 5 in Scotland :fwpc:
