Doesnt sound much different to UKs 'special police services' charges for things like football or music festivals etc.

Alot of councils & schools cough up for half the yearly PCSO wage, not a million miles away from what is happening across the UK.

Happens in the States too, a lot of officers subside their income by doing private security work.

Locally, utility companies that open a street must have police present to control traffic. The officers are there voluntarily and paid on overtime. The utility company pays to the city for the officer's time.

This isn't really dissimilar to Festivals paying for a Police presence on their sites or football teams contributing to match day costs. It's a bit of a non story really, its just interesting to see the prices.

Quite cheap really comparatively.

When I was working as an assistant surveyor on a 15.5k p.a. wage my work was billed to the customer per hour it was charged at 25-30 per hour.

How does that work if they end up arresting someone or having to deal with something that they are not hired for? Does the company not get a bit miffed?

Usually they will call an on duty officer to deal with that sort of thing, if they have t arrest someone at whatever site they are gaurding they will call to have the person transported, and take care of the paperwork later.
The client is paying for someone with arrest powers, so has to take into account they might be used.
