In the area I work in we have a number of Community Speed Watch Schemes where the police provide the volunteers all MoP's with Hi Viz. florries and a off the shelf speed guns.

Does anyone know what make or model of Speed Detection Gun is used in your area ?

How is the scheme managed in terms of the MoP's using the Speed Detection Gun and results and confrontation with alleged speeders detected exceeding the speed limit.

I am aware of a number of different versions of Community Speed Watch in use, be interesting to know how it functions in your areas ?

Many thanks.

C.

AFAIK there should not be any confrontation? It is a matter of the community taking the speed measurements and then feeding the results back into their local Road Safety Initiative. The MOPs shouldn't be setting up 'checkpoints' and I do not believe persons are prosecuted based on these operations.

I do have a vague recollection in my head of PCSOs being involved who then send letters on to drivers as an invitation for them to amend their driving manner and with leaflets regarding road safety? ( I may be making it up in my head!)

In my area Speed Watch is done between police and community volunteers. The volunteers are provided with a matrix sign with auto detector and record the VRM of any vehicles exceeding a predefined limit. These vehicles are then sent a warning letter from the RPU Insp.

If they see (and record someone speeding) a letter gets sent to the RO & RK.

Had one literally jump out at me in bath after I over took a cyclist, I slammed on my brakes as I though he was going to jump out in the road!

Keeps the pensioners out of trouble and stops them moaning about decimal currency, prescription prices and how bad the prize money is at Bingo these days for a few hours

Hey all, I'm a police volunteer with Lancashire constabulary community road watch!
We have the ageing (but still reliable!) LTi20/20 speedscope.
Is this a nationwide scheme or just limited to a few areas?

I believe it's a scheme implemented nationally (England & Wales).

We have a chap who takes out our Unipar's. Always goes out with a PCSO and they'll post off a letter to drivers over a set limit. Occasionally we'll park further up the road and they'll let us know of anyone taking the michael, we'll try and get them on our own speed gun and issue tickets.
