Hiya :)

Gone through plenty of rucksacks over the years, and I'm after a new one for general use. Wasn't impressed with Karrimor at all, with the material coming apart in a matter of weeks, so will steer clear of them this time.

Will be using it for general work use, commuting to and from work and that kind of thing. Quite like the black molle type backpacks but not wanting to spend silly money.

Any suggestions for something that will last me a long time? :)

I've not long bought this one (see link), has 4 separate pockets so plenty of room for compartmentalising. Seem fairly sturdy, fits all my gear in whilst cycling to shifts and also has molle for adding extra pouches for how you might like to adapt it. Only suggestion is that you waterproof it with Nikwax or some other proofer.

Being an odd sort, I have a Molle one, from TAS I think, but MC products are generally decent too. The only problem is, they generally lack organisation until you cover them with pouches, and then they look scary and that can defeat the object. Have a look at the 5.11 range for a decent balance.

Karrimor sold out their name a while ago to various cheap and cheerful manufacturers, but Karrimor SF still retains a high build quality. Their Predator patrol daysack was recently issued as part of the deployment bag to troops going to Afghanistan and is excellent; comes with plenty of molle loops too if that's your thing.

Eastpak do pretty awesome backpacks that are probably abit more suited to commuting than a patrol sack. Quality is excellent and they come with a 30yr garentee for the workmanship.

For organisation I normally use the drawstring mesh bags and small stash bags, the main compartment in the one I've linked to can hold more than I thought. I recently went up to the North of England and ended up with the following in my ruck sack: my slr camera + spare lens and battery in a camera bag, a litre bottle of water, a first aid kit (I'm a bit clumbsy), my sat nav, a hoody, sun glasses case, mini set of speakers, mp3 player, road map, my reading glasses and my friend's hoody. There was still a bit of room to spare aswell, the zips aren't waterproof mind but in all honesty it held up really well to the abuse I gave it when chucking it about for the weekend.

You may, it is very useful in organising your kit and keeping stuff to hand, but can make people think afos are on the train especially from behind. A waterproof cover from an outdoors shop is a good investment, also as a lot of kit is on the outside of the bag and vulnerable to the elements.

One very useful thing of buying molle packs online is that it's easy to gauge their size, if you remember it's one inch webbing stitched at 1.5" intervals

How would a black molle rucksack make anyone look like an AFO?

Cheers for info though :)

Well it doesnt, but if your rucksack is the shape mine is, and covered in pouches, it can look like the back of a tactical vest. I'll try to find a pic to make more sense!

I have this very rucksack for work. I've added the clip on klick fast docks so that I can put things like Airwave, ESD's and PDA's to it. The zipped areas have plenty of space.

I think that's the same as this from Patrol Store:

IF you're adding airwaves docks, make sure you get genuine Peter Jones ILG ones, with two different size 'tongues' for shirt and jacket tags, as the back (shirt size) tag is the only one that will fit Molle kit. Can't find it on PatrolStore, call Peter Jones direct to make sure you get the right one (or get it free from stores, they're the issue ones in the Met and I believe were designed for BTP)

I definitely recommend the 5.11 packs. Got one and it is amazing. Very tough loads of pockets. Comfy on a long wear too.

Wouldn't be putting any klickfast on the bag, got plenty of that on my vest and belt!

Rucksacks are a very personal thing depending on Body size and kit needs. Personally i love the 5.11 rush MOAB10 http://www.patrolsto...AB10-Black.html and the 5.11 RUSH 72 http://www.patrolsto...ck-p-10810.html. If your looking for a nice grab style bag to carry essentials the Op. Zulu Tactical Operations Backpack http://www.patrolsto...s-Backpack.html

I use a 40 litre one of these as a response bag, it can hold lots of other things!

Reviews on the 30 molle rucksack say it's a tad small, the bag from patrol store has one or two bad reviews........meh the hunt will go on!

Looking around £30-£50. I know I won't get a 5.11 for that but I reckon I will find something hard wearing for that perhaps.

And what kind of size
?

Perhaps a better question would be, what are you planning to carry in it?

Here's one to consider: http://www.ukmcpro.c...mart&Itemid=261

However at this price, you aren't going to get a lot of organisation and a decent build. This one's well built but lacks organisation without additional pouches, which will cost enough to probably make it worth buying the 5.11 in the first place!

Also if you're prepared to buy coyote or olive you get many more options
