A police officer has been charged in connection with an incident in which a seven-year-old girl was hit by a car.

Gary Johnston, a serving officer with Tayside Police, is accused of driving a Ford Focus police car dangerously while on duty on 13 November last year.

It is alleged that he caused the car to collide with a man and his young daughter on Douglas Road in Dundee.

At a hearing at the city's Sheriff Court the case was continued until next month.

Mr Johnston, 27, did not appear in court.

Defence solicitor George Donnelly said: "I appear for Mr Johnston and I would be obliged if the case could be continued without plea for three or four weeks.

"I have further investigations to make into the case."

Fiscal depute Gillian Sim said: "There is no objection from the Crown."

Prosecutors said the crash caused the man and girl serious injury.

Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist continued the case until mid August.

Ah shame.

Know the officer and its not good to hear that the evidence suggests that the initial claims are valid and that there has been enough for him to be charged. Also its not good to hear that his driving was infact deemed dangerous whilst not reponding or traveling to a call / emergency.

Will be intresting to watch any updates that the case brings and what the final outcome will be considering that it has already gone through PSD and its progressed to the current position

A reminder to everyone out there to keep it safe
