Does anyone know if there is a way of claiming back petrol and or bridge toll whilst doing your training?

I'm on the August intake but I live in Scunthorpe, and on the rubbish wage I'm on there's no way I can afford £15 petrol a time to attend the sessions!

If anyone could help that would be fantastic!

Katie.

You can claim back fuel by booking your duties through duty sheet (which you wont have access to yet) and you should be issued with bridge tickets. All of which the trainers will go through on the induction weekend.

Be aware that you will not get your expenses back until AFTER you have attested or leave which is sooner.

So you will have to fork out the £15 in fuel to start with, no doubt after day 1 you will notice others on your course from your area, best try to car share :)

You can claim your expenses as soon as you start training and get access to DutySheet (it'll all become clear, don't worry), there's no need to wait until after you attest. It may mean a trip to your local station to meet your special sergeant though because the trainers can't sign expense sheets off.

I got my mileage paid during training, although it was hardly worth claiming and I don't bother anymore.

Prae in C division the S/INPECTOR at Beverley told us in a meeting that the expenses would be done AFTER you attest or leave which for me was a month after I left.

I claimed and got paid during training. Payroll have no idea if you're attested or not anyway.

All you need is DutySheet and a S/Sgt's signature.

Once you get access to Duty Sheet you'll be able to re claim your expenses.. It does take a while mind you, well it did for me! They ended up messing up so I had go on the Humberside Police pay roll. I got my expenses back around two a month after I attested. Don't forget you can claim upto £60 boot allowance, just keep your receipts!

I feel for those who have to travel.. I live in Hull so it's a bonus for me.

Good luck all and don't be afraid to ask questions about anything, I'm sure everyone will try their best to help.

Cheers.

Did you have to change your insurance to business use?

Yes you do. The force send you a letter to forward on to your insurance company telling them not to charge you more. I got one anyway.

You don't have to do that anymore.

It depends how you do your shifts. I don't book off until I'm home after a shift so technically I use my car on duty and need business use.

It is advisable and costs no extra from most firms.

It depends on how you look at things. Technically a Constable is never "off" duty...

But you should be booking off as soon as your shift finishes and when in your own vehicle you shouldn't have any PPE on as everything should have been placed into a locker.

You are still classed as being on duty whilst traveling to and from duties so therefore should have business use on your insurance. As it counts as traveling to more than one place of work.

I think you have the wrong end of the stick, I am not saying I drive to and from duties fully kitted up, my kit is remains in my locker when I'm not on duty. What I am saying is that I do not book off duty until I arrive at home because as far as I'm concerned that is when my shift ends which is perfectly acceptable and hence I need the business use although I have it for my day job anyway.
