Hi Guys,

Bit of a random topic but wanted to see what people thought.. I've just come across this photo trying to find out about the uniform in Suffolk http://www.suffolk.p...nticeffort.aspx.

I was under the impression that the police were very strict with tattoos and that they should not be on show? Is this becoming something that is more relaxed?

I've seen many a skipper, pc and inspector have sleeve tattoos and wear short sleeve shirt. I believe it's one of those rarely enforced rules but be wary about getting stuck on if you do get caught. I was thinking about getting the bible verse Leviticus 19:28 tattooed on the top of my arm.

I think it varies what they are and where they are, below is the guidance from my force:

Tattoos are not a bar to appointment. However, some tattoos could potentially offend members of the public or colleagues, or could bring discredit to the police service. It depends on their size, nature and location.

Tattoos are not acceptable if they:
Undermine the dignity and authority of the Constabulary;
Could cause offence to members of the public or colleagues and/or invite provocation;
Are garish or numerous or particularly prominent;
Indicate unacceptable attitudes towards genders, minority groups or any other section of the community;
Indicate alignment with a particular group which could cause offence to members of the public or colleagues;
Are considered to be rude, lewd, crude, racist, sexist, sectarian, homophobic, violent or intimidating.

I have a couple of tatts but they don't show when I'm wearing short sleeves and my body armour. I do tend to wear an extra t shirt under my shirts though so that covers up the one on my back. I'm going to get more tatts but again they'll probably be in areas that can't be seen when wearing uniform.

I have to wear a long sleeve top (black moisture wicking type) as I was pulled up (nicely, I might add) by the duty Gov' at the nick. Not a major issue as I'm only there a couple of times a month but it does seem a bit backward when I see regular officers (mainly female..not a dig, just an observation :new_hug: ) with tattoos on the wrist which are not covered. Don't hurt me girls...well, not too much :surrender: :new_girlpower:

I work with a lot of cops who have large visible tattoos and come across a few with tattoos on their necks. I think many forces are moving with the times, tattoos are a lot more acceptable and normal than some people may have viewed them previously.

Suffolk change with the CCs. Some don't mind tattoos as long as they're not offensive, others dont. If you are you going to Ipswich you' see a sergeant with a full sleeve
