Some Greek Cyp Police are armed, but not routinely. Most don't carry cuffs, batons etc. Its worth noting the Cyp Police and Fire Service staff can transfer between each other.

Not as I remember when I was in Northern Cyprus last year, but I was busy enjoying my holiday rather than looking for armed Police officers. I did see a lot of Turkish Soldiers that were armed particular Military Police. :ninja:

Cyps always keep a 50€ note in their glovebox incase of a heavy right foot.

That says all you need to know about Cypriot police.

Just a question, but with your user name of Hellenic, I thought you might have known this already?

I don't believe they are, my understanding (from a Cyp Policeman) was you can apply to transfer from one to the other with ease and you receive 'a little' training. If I am honest, most of the Cyp Police I came across out there were reluctant to do any for of policing and would just not bother, that said up in Ayia Napa their plain clothes units were always nabbing people.

I imagine if there ever was a real need for armed units the National Guard or the Greek military would be used, the vast majority are well trained in urban warfare in anticipation of a potential Turkish attack so should be handle most issues quite well. Their importance to collateral damage though may be less than your usual armed police.

Up in Nicosia they have specialist armed Police squad type thingys. These squads used to routinely bolster regular officers and were quite proactive in Napa and Paphos, they used to wear a camouflage uniform and were armed. Don't know if things have changed in the last couple of years though.

All Turkish police (whether in Northern Cyprus or Turkey) are armed, even traffic police. Every officer also has military training after doing 15 months of military service.
