Arrest after policeman in Bishop Auckland knocked down

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder a plain clothes police officer who was knocked down by a fleeing car.

The officer, 37, was injured in Bishop Auckland at about 01:00 BST as he tried to stop a vehicle. He was not seriously injured.

The Vauxhall Vectra was driven at the officer, hitting him, before it made off, Durham Police said.
A 33-year-old man was later arrested in Tenters Street.

The 37-year-old officer, who is based in the town, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham where he is being treated for cuts, bruises and leg injuries.

A force spokesman said his condition was not serious and they are appealing for witnesses.
