Having just had tens of pounds invested in our careers by being issued personal radios, I find it odd that we don't get battery chargers too.

Any reason why we can't buy our own chargers / spare batts?

Most likely to prevent unathorised use.

When the radio dies it's gone. If you manage to re-charge it, you are required to enter the code. However if the battery remains charged, it's a different story.

Really? My radio is currently in my posession but turned off. As I am not on duty I have no reason to use it. But, when I turn it back on again I am required to enter the code whether the battery is fully charged, partially charged etc.

Yes, that's normal, when you turn it off/on, you are required to authorise it via the code, my first post wasn't very clear with that.

But that doesn't really answer my question. As an authorised user of the equipment which we we have been issued is there any reason why we cannot buy our own charger and keep the the thing ready for operational use as our local force has deemed it necessary not to supply us with one. Besides, who is going to 'ban' me from buying a piece of equipment which is readily available to purchase? I would have thought the long term benefits were obvious.

I would rather turn up for duty with a fully charged battery (and a spare) rather than spend the beginning of shift scratching round for a battery (because everyone else has taken extras for spares themselves. At least if I'm managing my own radio battery usage / charging regime etc then i know that I'm always 'good to go' etc...

This appears a nationwide problem and I don't see why you can't buy a charger should you wish to do so.
I am fortunate in that my civilian employer uses the same batteries as my force so I take my own in when I do a duty.

It's farcial watching my colleagues (both regular and special) chase around looking for charged batteries at the start of a duty.

Why can't the police get simple things like this right?

I am in Herts, and we get a radio charger and spare battery to keep at home. We are told its pretty much punishable by death if we turn it on while not on duty though!!!

your station will have batteries charging and you should be issued a airwave locker.
where you charge after each shift however if it runs flat your station will have some recharging, you dont need to buy a charger as you should not be taking your airwave home.

as you should not be taking your airwave home.

that must be a force policy... As all officers (regs and specials) in herts take theirs home.

I am not sure how many Northampton officers have answered your question, butletme try: There are personal lockers with chargers when you get to your station, they used to issue chargers with the first roll out but they ware now kept as spares at IST, ref battery, there was an issue of personal spare batteries but that happend once, there are spares at the nick on charge 24/7, for some reason in the cold a battery only last 6 hours our so.

We don't need them. We have one in our airwaves locker (where your radio should usually stay) and 9/10 there are a few fully charged batteries on the banks.
