Hi guys

Has anyone got any tips on how to be smoother in handing out tickets?
EFPN, NEFPN, PNDs etc

I seem to know what I need to say, but I can't seem to handle the mental juggling.

I have a...'system', but I don't want to seem to be in a robotic fashion.

Point out offence,
Caution/Caution+2
Contemp, Q+A on p2p noting down everything in PNB
'Driving on phone' - Were you here, in this vehicle, at this time, this date? were you on your phone? were you making an emergency call? etc
Do other investigative stuff, ask to check call log and for the imei etc.
Now caution/note reply

What I am finding difficult is doing this quickly and doing it smoothly, any tips ? How do you guys vary this through other tickets

Thanks

Best to concentrate on getting it right to start with - the smoothness and quickness will come with practice. If you get something wrong because you hurried it, it just takes longer to fix it or your ticket gets rejected/quashed,

That's my plan, I know it's all about experience, but my force has the PDU system whereby you have an assessment shift and trainers before you go on to working from a main station. I've been on for 6 months now and that assessment is nigh, and my shifts have been somewhat, empty and dead a lot of the time. But I have felt myself progress, although I haven't managed to do a massive amount compared with a lot of other specials, which is a shame. I've done countless hort/1s, a single EFPN, a single PND and a summons to court for a mobile phone, i've done quite a bit of other stuff, I haven't gotten an arrest yet, which is just bad luck, although i'm fairly clued up on that process. I'm just curious on how others manage to stop themselves from getting muddled with the mental juggling.

Don't rush it is the key thing. If it takes you 20mins to do the process the first couple of times - then so be it, it's better to get it right rather than the person who's unhappy, deciding to take it to court and you end up the creek.

I've been in 16 months now and only a month or so mastered being able to do the process quickly, you soon get used to it :)

Although by no means an expert on traffic, should there be a NIP in there too?

You only NIP for certain offences, mainly:

Dangerous/careless/inconsiderate driving/cycling.
Vehicle dangerous obstruction.

Speeding.

Traffic signs/ATS.

And a few other more obscure ones.

Make sure you know the points to prove and any defences, practice will improve your technique.
If you are issuing a ticket there is no requirement to NIP, it's only for reporting but it's useful to know which offences a NIP applies to.

I don't believe that you have to give a NIP if you are giving them a ticket. No harm in giving the wording etc

NIP's are for certain offences where the driver was not stopped at the time. If they are stopped and ticketed / Processed at the time then they know about it.

As I understand it, the offences I listed above require verbal NIP to be given to driver when stopped at the time by police, or in writing within 14 days if not stopped at the time, ie. caught via camera or seen by officer not in a position to stop the vehicle.

Paul, correct.

mptch, just take your time initially, smoothness will come eventually, make sure you cover the relevant points/ defence etc, it will become clear - eventually.

A NIP should be given for the following offences -

• Dangerous or careless driving/cycling
• Leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position
• Exceeding the speed limit
• Failing to conform to a direction given by an officer engaged in traffic direction
• Failing to conform to a traffic sign which includes -

* Red ATS
* Red lights at level crossings
* No entry
* Stop or give way
* Keep left/right
* Double white lines
* Priority to oncoming vehicles
* No U-turn
* Turn ahead in direction shown
* One way street signs

A NIP is not required when the offence is dealt with by the issue of a fixed penalty or if the offence occurred immediately before/at the time of a collision.

There is no harm in giving a verbal NIP when issuing a ticket but it is not required.
