Hey hey,

We this goes out to all my fellow SC and PC's what do you think some good skills are to know as a SC what do you think the basic skills should be of us?
  • Understand basic paperwork such as crime reports and basic statements
  • Good understanding of thing such as Custody (booking in.....searches.....handling property)
And to any PC's would like prefer SC to be like just another full time officer e.g skills/ knowledge or do you mind helping us along when needed or do you see SC more as a dead weight on a shift?????

Investigation skills are rather handy to have.

Some specials are good, some (the minority) are shocking and purely act as ballast. I won't name names obviously but bloody hell... At least pretend to give a toss and at least try to talk to at least one person.... Even if it's over the radio!

Sadly cov plod that's a very true, some of us do as much as possible whilst others get away with doing alot of nothing and thats if they even come in and when they are you can bet your bottom dollar they are out of there on time with nothing of worth having been completed!

Might be a bit of a rant but we were off 2 hours late this morning finishing at 4am to make sure a job was done satisfactorily for CID, want to wear uniform then accept it comes with conditions!

It's the minority where I am, most are very good and will do as much as they can which is always appreciated.

Sadly there are a few that turn up late, moan, don't talk to anyone (including the shift), expect to get ferried about all shift an then go home after doing th square root of naff all. Its got to the point where they are more of a hindrance than an aid so I refuse to take them out now... As I was bored of feeling like an appropriate adult!

On the whole though we're very lucky to have the dedicated ones and they're worth their weight in gold :)

Back to skills....

Good communication skills

you need to know certain basic things like powers:

powers to search people and be competent in searching someone by yourself. being able to have personal safety awareness so you don't need to have someone babysit you and so you can be relied upon to watch someone else's back when they are dealing with someone.

have an solid understanding of what happens in the custody block so you don't get an ear bashing from custody sgt's and you don't cause the block to grind to halt because you're taking ages.

Try to get experience of things as often as possible - stop cars/people regularly to get comfortable talking to people. As people have mentioned above don't just wander around thinking "look at me in a police uniform" (seen a few of these on broad street/arcadian a few times) but actively police.

Most specials do these things anyway and try to learn all the time. Don't be one of those that just wants to blue light everywhere without actually deal with anything when they arrive.

The number one - don't be afraid to ask someone if you're not sure how to do something, don't try and bulls*** your way through something and possibly get it wrong.
