A Humberside Police officer has been commended by a judge for his bravery after restraining a woman armed with an air pistol.
PC Carl Bugg tackled 19-year-old Kerri May Wood to the ground in October last year in Queen's Gardens in the centre of Hull.
PC Bugg was uninjured although Wood managed to fire twice.
Recorder Simon Jackson QC ordered Wood, of Cherry Garth, Beverley, to be detained in a secure hospital.
The CCTV is thought provoking.

I'm sure if it had gone wrong the SMT would have had something to say, but because it went right they have no choice but to praise the officer!

I for one think it's a jolly good show and he deserves the medals and praise he gets!

There are several medals awarded to police officers for gallantry, along with the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct - over half of the commendations involve firearms. There are also a whole host of force specific, and other national recognitions, available.

The difference is that medals for bravery tend to involve the actual reality of the situation, i.e. had this been a "proper" firearm he would more likely qualify. Silly but that is how it goes, but the reverse applies to - you can do nothing different, die and get a medal v life and get nothing. I'm sure this officer would accept no medal v having faced an actual firearm.

Definitely BZ to PC Bugg and hopefully he will receive some form of recognition for his actions.

Quality job, a medal for that man please! I would like to have seen him arriving into shot already horizontal with a flying shoulder tackle however. I give his dive a 7/10....

I have some fantastic CCTV somewhere of me running after a drug dealer that just made off after a colleague from a different team (who clearly hadn't thought it through) told him he was getting strip searched without having taken hold of him... As he's running he's busily trying to shove numerous packages of heroin down his throat from his pants... While Im running around like an idiot my mate can be seen in a different camera calmly taking his jacket off, folding it and placing it out of harms way before coming in to my camera shot near horizontal in to the side of the dealer! Then there comes the persuasion to spit out the gear and trying not to let him swallow all this loose heroin (which wouldn't look good if you didn't know there was a good chance of him dying otherwise!) and a member of the public getting out his motor to come and help who clearly was about to boot the dealer in the face while he was on the floor pinned down by us if we hadn't have stopped him!

That's why I love this job once in a while!

Whilst it all ended well My only question is why didn't they wait for the firearms unit to arrive and deal with it? Should it have gone wrong it could have been a case of 1 dead officer for nothing.

I dont know but it may have been because at the start of the cctv where its pointing off to the left of shot shes actually aiming it at other officers

Where I am we don't have a tooled up car only minutes away, same with most of the shire forces, which us why the unarmed bobby in such places is such a hero! We wear our capes under our hi-viz. I'm sure if it had been the Met there would have been a few hundred cops running round with guns looking like a 14 year old's wet SAS dream!

Whilst a car in the Met may not be as far away could you remind me how long a bullet takes to travel 50 yards? It doesn't make a lot of difference if someone really does start shooting. Presides it can take longer in the Met than you may think.

His quick thinking reaction may well have saved a life and certainly saved lots of police time together with the potential disruption caused by a 'stand-off' etc. Well done PC Carl Bugg!
