Having been watching the BBC1 program, Euro 2012 - Stadiums of Hate this evening I'm horrified at the levels of racism and football hooliganism that exists within Poland and the Ukraine. I'm quite supprised that these nations have been granted the tournament because of this.

It will be interesting to see the public order tactics employed by Polish and Ukranian cops, from what was shown in the Panorama program, it's abit haphazard.

What are your views? Should the tournament be held in counties where these problems exist?
Should nations competing provide support in terms of officers and training for the host nations?

I was thinking exactly the same. I was quite horrified how violent and racist the fans appear to be, and how the Police seem to brush it off and ignore it as if it never happened.

I can't actually believe that Fifa/UEFA have granted the country permission to hold the Euros there!

Moved to Policing Overseas

I would argue that this isnt an overseas policing topic, more a general discussion about how Euro 2012 will turn out. Ho hum.

didnt see the program, just the preview... but the young asian students who went to watch their local team who got set upon by their OWN fans, their fellow supporters? purely because they were an ethnic minority? that was absolutely disgusting. Not to mention how when they where receiving medical treatment there was no police there, and one of the young guys saying something along the lines of "the police don't care"

If you get a chance give it a watch, it'll be on iPlayer. There is definitely a deep seated hatered for minorities, as well as rivals who support a diffrent team. It's beyond the extent of UK hooliganism.

The Polish Police are making attempts to combat football violence, from what I've seen and heard from speaking to a former Polish cop they are fighting a losing battle as it continues to take more of a hold!

Well, the last time I checked, neither Poland nor the Ukraine was in the UK. And General Discussion isn't for talking about football. So it was either here, or real world.

Ho hum indeed.

Ross Kemp did a piece in his Ross Kemp On Gangs about the racist links and football hooliganism in Poland - has been repeated a couple times on Sky3/PickTV over the last 3 weeks - I think it's worth a bit of a watch re: Polish Police Public Order.

Personally I think that where scenes of racism, hooliganism and intolerance are displayed in the magnitude that was shown on Stadiums of Hate, there should be an outright ban on those countries ever having the chance to hold such events unless their act is cleaned up. The risk of foreign nationals going to have a good time and watch the football, minding their own business being targeted because of their nationality or race is too great to even display the core values of sportsmanship and co-operation. It's people like the ones portrayed in the program that ruined sports. When you look at the hooligan firms over here for example, they were, in my opinion, a catalyst for segregation of home/away fans to become the norm. Luckily over here they don't go to the lengths of what was broadcasted in the public eye.

The hosting nations providing support is a difficult one. While it would be beneficial for both nations and increase the availability of assistance, cross border laws could be different which could cause confusion amongst many. Plus the cost of it needs to be considered as well, not just the financial implications but the manpower cost.

This is one of the reasons I hate football - what other sport would have fans that are willing to kill their neighbour because they support a different team, the colour of their skin, etc. etc. etc.

I'm working a public order special event when the football is on.

Chariot Racing - Nika riots of 532AD :new_yes:

In all seriousness violence is not unique to association football. American Football has seen some pretty nasty clashes between rival fans as have a number of other sports. I remember seeing some Greek basketball fans rioting on the news a couple of years ago for a start.

It's not just rioting, it's the mixture of the well established culture of racism, white supremacy, xenophobia and neo nazism. The fact that the Foreign Office has issued travel warnings to asian and "minority" supporters about the dangers of attending the tournament I think it's clear there is definately some risk.

I'm no expert in the area, but I don't think the Ukranian police are trained to the required level to police such an event safely or effectively. From the interview with a Ukranian Police "Major" or something, they seem like the key stone cops.
The Polish Police do look and act in a far more professional manner when dealing with matches, they separate fans etc etc but it just doesn't seem enough!

I'd argue that has very little to do with football and a lot more to do with the general situation in those countries.
