I've had a quick look on the website but haven't been able to find anything specific. Does anyone know what their policy is on laser eye surgery?
I know that the armed forces kind of accept certain types and you will be downgraded for a year, is it roughly the same with the CNC?

Hi wanttobecnc
I can tell you that the CNC will accept Lasik and Lasek surgery but no other. If you have an ongoing application, they advised me that they will put your app on hold for 6 weeks if you have surgery done. The minumum wait is 6 weeks. I had mine done at the end of Feb, thank goodness! because I have the assessment centre in early June, which I wasn't expecting so soon! I went for my routine appointment yesterday and my vision is now above 20/20. I had distance vision corrected (as I don't want to shoot the wrong person! Lol!) So inevitably the near site goes, that doesn't bother me tho. I am now 1.75 glasses for reading and 1.25 for writing this! But my vision is above the 6/12. It has to be above 6/12 in each eye individually, with or without visual aid. Hope this is of some help to you!

maidinwales,
Thanks for the reply, I've been thinking of getting my eyes done for a while now (I wear glasses for distance), I have a start date for July, but I think I will wait until after I start before getting my eyes lasered. If I'd had known about the 6 weeks I would have had them done before lol. I've just had the medical and only just passed the required standard for unaided.
Also if you don't mind me asking, where did you have it done? and would you recommend them?

Hi wanttobecnc
Congratulations on passing! Very best of luck with your start! Good plan, waiting till your in, cos maybe the CNC or some colleagues will be able to point you in the right direction.
Theres been a lot of controversy about where/who to go to. I went with Optical Express, although some people say they're not very good. I'll be totally honest with you wtbcnc, I went to Chester for the consultation and was seen by a young man from New Zealand, I don't want to give his name. When he checked my eyes and confirmed I was elligable for the surgery he actually told me it would cost me (can't remember exact figures} about £1300 for my left eye and £750 for my right. I was flabberghasted....meanwhile, I had already told the girl who was dealing with my appointment/ care that I had an application with the CNC to be an AFO and it was very important to me that my eyesight was well within the standard. When I went back downstairs to confirm the details, I told the girl that I was gobbsmacked by the price the optometrist had given me and said 'what happened to the advert on TV that says you can get your eyes done for £390 each' In a blink of an eye (no pun intended there!) she said 'oh yes, we can do it for that', So I thought 'bargain' and paid the £780 there and then! Went to Manchester, had the surgery, my opinion is that the surgeon seemed to be in a rush......but.....having said that, he did pick up on my right eye having a scar on it. So, I had Lasik in my left eye and Lasek in my right. My right eye has taken a long time to get to where it needed to be, from the end of Feb until now, so, had I have been at eyetest stage any earlier I may have failed as 1 month ago my right eye was a wobbly 6/12, and that was about 8 weeks. Strangely enough the NZ chap isn't there anymore, I only had one check up with him the day after the surgery...................and now apparently he's left! So I'm not sure what to think about that and don't know whether I'd recommend them or not.
My advice is see if anyone else on the forum replies, or start a new topic asking outright.
Good Luck

I've looked around a little, and if i was to get it done I think I'd go for Ultralase Ultra Elite. I have heard of people saying bad things about Optical Express, although I am yet to meet anyone who has personally had a bad experience. I am definitely going to get it done, just not sure when. Thanks for the advice and be sure to post up on the forum how you get on with your assessment centre!
