Hey all :)

Ok in my force we use the Sepura SRH3900 radios. The annoying thing with them is that everytime there is a broadcast on the radio the screen backlight comes on then goes off.

I know in other forces the backlight only comes on when a button of any sort or volume key is pressed. This would not only be a less annoying option but would also save the battery life.

Does anyone know how to change the backlight settings to stop the light coming on when control are broadcasting etc

dosnt seem to be anywhere in the radio manual about having the funtion to change the setting of the backlight as you see fit.

Any help from you super experts would be great.

Cheers :)

Certainly on my sepura there's an option to turn the backlight on or off - it's listed as "covert mode" and it stops the LED flashing too.

Why do you noy know this....?

Your TRAINING on the radios would include a user guide, which goes through the soft keys and settings functions.

Or call your Airwave support team.

Because some forces go "Here's how you turn it on, here's how you change a talkgroup, here's how you talk on a talkgroup and then there's some menus in there somewhere but you don't need them..."

My training didn't include a user guide and nor was I provided one when I was granted a personal terminal.

Training in my force is basic on the radios. No detailed info on setting etc so I wouldn't jump to the assumption that the training in each force is in-depth and covers how to change the settings.

Most of my knowledge on the radio was built by using it when on duty and by asking the regulars I was teamed up with.

My training was a 5 minute lesson of staring at a radio from across the class room.

Because we only got very little training on it, the rest is learned on duty. but sometimes not everyone knows all the functions. Hence why im asking here if anyone knows of this function.

There are several funtions on it that your not trained on, i know how to change channels/point2point someone/emergency button etc so the basics.

If anyone could help that would be great.

I'm pretty sure you can change it in settings. Press the down button (over the number 2 button) then using top right button, scroll along to settings (number 7 in the menu IIRC) I'm pretty sure there is a sub menu for backlight settings in there. :aok:

I have to say, our training was pretty good, although I'd of liked to spend some more time practicing with a radio than we did, but apparently its a full day course for the regs cut down to fit into 4 hours for specials, so the practical bits got cut.

Doesn't that change some other settings too? We were told that changed the mic so you could be heard if you were whispering.

Worth noting that some of the settings may have been disabled by your airwaves team - this could be one of them! I have the SRP-2000, the manual states all the options but none are there as airwaves have removed them.

Our screen layout is different to this. It's down to the software installed I believe. :aok:

I must admit that I am no 'techno junkie' and during my service we had 4 different types of radios and 2 different types of tetra sets. It drove me mad! I know technology has improved, but it seems that the training available for users of these changes and improvements is very limited.

When we delete the inbox on the vehicle set, they stay deleted so I can't help you there. We don't get messages sent to our radios, only the car set. :aok:

Yes well, for those forces which don't invest in some decent Airwaves training, then i would contact the Airwaves support team, if a in the know reg isn't available. I say that, but our training must have only been about half aday then some practice over lunch, most of the learning is indeed on division.

Realisitically though, a bit of play and you've cracked it as the menu's are't too expansive. Just don't really like talking about stuff which has RESTRICTED at the top, on a public forum....course a person might only know that because they had a manual :new_doh2:

Apologies however for assuming that a training input would be of any depth...though knowing the way forces work at times, doesnt shock me. I honestly find it shocking that no guide of any kind was given, that is a basic fail from the instructor (of any kind).

But Im an in the know reg, and I dont know :(

as for not wanting to discuss it, I can see your reasoning, however the op just asked about turning the backlight off, and if someone who shouldnt did have a radio then it would have been taken out of service so they couldnt use it anyway no matter how hard they tried

I doubt it's restricted - Sepura radios are used not just in the UK for other non-police stuff.

A data sheet is available from the Sepura website here

On my radio I press the circular mode button and use the navi-knob to select Covert Mode. But I guess it depends on the software.

But i'm fairly sure you could work it out from using it.

Fairly sure it has restricted on the top (can't be sure though), but people can say what they like. As for the data sheet, and? Its not a manual. I still honestly think own in force help is best...especially as there atleast 3 types of handhelds as well as colour screen/grey scale for 1 at least.

Covert mode turns the light off completely though, the OP just wants to turn it off when someone else is talking. ;)

My manual says restricted too, but I think that because it tells you about the backup system, and procedures and stuff, rather than how to turn the backlight on and off :)

Covert mode is the only way to do this. The exact route depends on your software flash and hot key links will vary depending on what fill you have. I use the covert mode on mine - i dont need the LED as it beeps if I lose signal and the backlight isnt essential in me being able to talk and hear.

Oh, you mean Ninja Mode?

We can't talk about that, definitely restricted. :ninja:
