Interesting that the live BBC stream is being relayed via 3G.

If you have watched much so far you wont have seen many bobbies. ACPO are quite clearly saying we should not be highly visible. This may not be the case in London but its what we are being told up North.

When the torch passed near Swindon, the live update feed mentioned that the 3G signal may be lost due to something or another.

And another mention today :

We are due to pick up coverage, 3G signal permitting, when the torch arrives in Porthmadog.

And it's all explained how it's done via this interesting video

No, the outside broadcasting of that is satellite uplinked.

For shorter events (only a few days in length) satellite is much better, but for something that is spread over as many days as this, a satellite uplink would be prohibitively expensive, and in this case, it should have signal for most of the route. Very interesting video to watch :)

Well the bikes use a radio link that is picked up by an intelligent receive aerial, fitted to an aircraft which fly's in patterns at 25,00 feet over London.

The link is then forwarded onto an outside broadcasting unit along the route.

The torch relay came through Cleveland yesterday and the Met police were fantastic. The motor cycle cops were giving the crowd high fives and were very friendly. Job well done!

Having just stood and waited for the torch to arrive, with a few other people and getting wet in the process, I have to say the highlight wasnt the torch itself it was in fact the officers from the Met on bikes (pedal and motor) and in their cars who I must say made it quite enjoyable (the brief bit) they at least waved to the crowd more, they shook hands and the bikers were doing high fives all along the route where as the torch, blink and you miss it

Well done Met (not often I say that)

Sounds like the motorcycle guys have been doing that all around the country, they were doing it when they were in Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Nice work if you can get it!

Great for public confidence, the Met cops did a fantastic job - i thought that was better than seeing the actual torch lol

Stood in headingley yesterday watching it, the highlight certainly was the bikes. As a woman stood next to me said "[the met] police bikers sapping it for all its worth".

nearly touched the torch!

A woman has been bundled out of the way by members of the Metropolitan Police torch security team during the Olympic torch relay in Leeds as she attempted to touch the torch in the hope of bringing good luck to Italy's football team.
The incident happened at about 07:30 BST as the torch was being carried along Kirkgate in Leeds.
Gilda Porcelli, who owns and runs an Italian restaurant in Leeds city centre, was pushed out of the way by an officer who was accompanying Romanian torchbearer Alexandru Dumitru on his leg of the relay.
Ms Porcelli admitted it was a "mistake" to step out in front of the relay to try and touch the torch.
She said she was hoping to bring good luck to the Italian football team ahead of its clash with Germany in the Euro 2012 semi-finals on Thursday.
