A police officer who posted a "wholly inappropriate" message on Twitter about arrests after an attack on a 93-year-old woman has been reprimanded.

Two people arrested on Thursday in connection with an assault on Emma Winnall in Birmingham last month have since been released on police bail.

PC Hanif Sanghar used the social network site to send out a tweet about the case.

West Midlands Police apologised and said the tweet had been removed.

It added that the two suspects who were arrested on Thursday were innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

In a statement Chief Inspector Sally Seeley said: "Like most people, the officer who tweeted about his role in the double arrest was shocked by the violent nature of the attack on Mrs Winnall and was keen to update people with the latest development in the case.

"It is clear that in doing this, he used terminology which was wholly inappropriate."

You can sort of understand it though. Emotions were obviously running high.

I'm guessing he won't make inspector then?

This is all because he used the wrong terminology. What he said was something like "Officers have arrested the offenders in connection with..." but what he should have said is "Officers have arrested suspects in connection with..."

More likely to have been "Officers have arrested the scumbags in connection with..." :new_yes:

Interesting spin put on this story by today's Metro - they don't seem to be particularly outraged by the tweet...

I feel really sorry for this officer. It looks as though his account has been removed from twitter, which is a shame as his tweets were a great insight into policing the West Midlands.
Not only this, but he came across as a really dedicated officer, and I mean really dedicated. I fear that this disciplining (for what was probably an honest mistake) may have curbed the enthusiasm of this officer, which will be a great loss to his team and WMP as a whole.
