If I get injured whilst on duty is there a personal injury insurance that would cover me from lost time at my day job?

if you're injured whilst at work you're covered by your employer's liability insurance.

I seem to remember there was a big debate recently as to whether, as a special, you're considered an 'employee' and therefore subject to such things. Can't remember what the consensus was.

I looked into this a while ago and am pretty sure that if you get injured as a Special that there is no cover for any time off of your day job. I took out an insurance policy with Police Specials Insurance as they cover injury, life, travel and legal all in one policy.

I'm sure there are others out there who do the same thing, but would recommend them based on my experience!

Thank you for the link I'll take a look. Not planning on getting injured but would like some reassurance if it ever happened.

If you are injured on duty your force have a duty to pay you equivalent to what you would earn in your day job. Although I am unsure of the length of time they pay for could be up to 12 months in full and 50% for the following 12 months but I'm not sure. I currently have a SC in this situation.

There is also the Specials Welfare fund which you can obtain payments from and the criminal injuries compensation scheme, which if you manage to qualify and fill out the lengthy form has a minimum payment of £1000 - 1500 (I think).

You are well protected and looked after as part of the Special Constabulary, if you are not following an injury your force are not fulfilling their duty of care to you as an officer, regardless of whether you are considered an employee or not.

There is a home office scheme - there is no need to take extra insurance out as well.

We are all part of the NPIA scheme and can make claims through that. But not sure what happens when the NPIA dissolves this year or next.

Special Constables are provided for under Special Constables (Injury Benefit) Regulations 1987 and also Special Constables (Pensions) Regulations 1973. There is also an NPIA circular which you can view in the link below which covers the gaps which the other two regulations did not cover;

Hope that helps!
