Hey all

I have recently got into the Specials in Nottingham (Central Division), and have been thinking about boots. I know we get a boot allowance, but I already own a good quality pair, almost brand new and wondered what type of boot we have to have? Is there a specific type or is it left up to us?

Also, how much is the boot allowance??

Cheers!

When I spoke to Sue you are only entitled to boot allowance if you do x amount of hours a year and we missed this financial year so cant claim.

You will get the allowance automatically if you have completed the required amount of hours, however I do believe that they count training hours towards the total so you may find that you will get the allowance even if you have just finished training.

There are no real guidence around what boots to buy and if you have a new set that are good and sturdy then they will do the job. If you ask around you will find everyone has different brands etc.

You will only get the boot allowance if you have submitted your hours, chances are if you are at training school you would not have done this.

Boot allowance is around £60-80 (I can never remember).

Hi-tech magnum classics are around £50 and mine have lasted almost four years of abuse.

Boot allowance is £70 and paid by BACS directly to your bank account, you can spend it on whatever you like. You need to do 210 hours to qualify and submit all your hours by the 5th of the following month.

The deadline is April 5th each year. Bare in mind, I have to input 200+ duty hours a month onto the system, if you suddenly discover you need to submit 12 months of hours at the start of April you are either going to miss out or receive a payment later in the year.

It is also an Operational Order (i.e. Mandatory) to submit duty hours by the 5th of the following month. Failure to do so is in breach of your terms and conditions and affects the amount of money the force receives for training and equipping specials.

Do Notts Police allow Steel Toe boots or do they require none steel toe?. I'm starting Specials training in September (depending on final vetting stage, touch wood) and i was just looking on Ebay at some Magnums.

HI Marcus, did you do the fitness test on the 14th of July?

I dont want to get ahead of my self, but will be looking to get some boots, does anyone know any shops in the midlands that would sell suitable boots? I want to avoid getting them over the internet as they might not fit etc etc and be nice to try on a few different kinds. Ideally something like the patrolstore.co.uk.

I don't know if there are any specific guidelines around what boots you can/cannot buy, but I have not seen many people with steel toe cap ones most just have normal boots such as Magnums.

As long as the boots are black, sturdy and you find them comfortable then I would say they will do.

If you are unsure people can wear black shoes while in training so just do that and ask someone at the training school.

Just to back up what SPC Matthew has said, you cannot get steel toe cap or composite toe cap boots either. The reason being as it was put to me was if you are taking someone down to the ground and accidently kick them in the shin or other body part and break/fracture something then there will be loads of questions etc etc.

Hi there,

Thanks for the final word on it. I thought it would probably be none steel toe due to the health and safety issue, but i saw a cheap pair of steels on ebay so thought i would ask.

Cheers

The old steel toe cap questions..

Yes you can have steelies though lots of officers still think you cant. Its PPE at the end of the day and its easy to justify the protection of yourself and you feet in the environment you work in, some people would like to imagine we're given foam batons.

I dont have steelies myself as the force was hoo-ha'ing whether or not we could have them when I bought mine, 2 weeks later I got an email saying it was fine. I'd prefer kevlar toes anyway as less clunky than metal ones.

Really  Training school still tells new specials that they can not have steel toe caps.

When was this mate? I spoke to sue in may before I started my training and she said its a no because of the possible repercussions of kicking someone by accident when your in a scuffle.

If memory served me right Magnum Response used to be issued by stores also

Either way I would triple check with HR before buying any. It's probably all good getting them for safety until something happens and things change.

Personally I would just go get a set of boots without steel toe caps, if they turn round and say you can't have steel toe cap boots you didn't buy them in the first place. I don't have steel toe cap boots and mine are very comfortable. I gave never been in a situation where I have wished I have had them.
