A pair of thugs who posed as undercover cops before mugging a teenager in Manchester city centre are facing jail.
Michael Walford, 48, and Paul Brown, 29, stopped a 17-year-old near the Lass O’Gowrie pub on Charles Street, off Oxford Road.
They told him they were undercover police officers and that he needed to be searched, Manchester magistrates court heard.
The two men then riffled through his pockets stealing his wallet, mobile phone and £208 in cash.
They continued the pretence that they were undercover police – even pretending to call in to fellow officers during the terrifying 20-minute ordeal.
The robbery happened at around 2am in the morning on November 26 last year.
A-level student Mr Shoesmith later reported the mugging, which was caught on CCTV, to police. When the pair were brought in for questioning they refused to answer questions and had been due to stand trial.
But both Walford, of Wellesley Avenue, Openshaw, and Brown, of Audenshaw Road, Audenshaw, changed their minds and decided to plead guilty to a charge of theft.
They were granted unconditional bail until April 25 while pre-sentence reports are prepared.
Magistrates warned both men that they faced jail.

Its kind of sad that people will actually do this kind of thing and the average Joe public wouldn't actually think about asking to see a warrant card or be able to tell the difference if someone did produce one.

Thats not a warrant card, its a holder so perhaps its time we let the public know via media what We as Police officers should reveal when carrying out a search and what REAL warrant card looks like.

Yes i know that it is a warrant card holder with a badge and any mod will tell you you cant put a police warrant card on this forum to show what they look like, but it has been known people do make up fakes to fit in the wallet, the photo only was to show how to make up a fake police ID.with stuff you can buy on Ebay.

Warrant card or no warrant card, badge or no badge, there will always be some WALTS or VILLAINS who pose as police officers for their own gratification. I don't think many members of the public know what a warrant card looks like, there is no reason why they should. Like badges, they differ from force to force anyway!

Jail for those two though please!

It doesn't help that different forces have different styles of warrant card, So unless you are going to put sample pictures of every forces warrant card - and send David into apoplexy in the process - I dont think Joe Public is ever going to know if the card they are looking at is a real one or not

Time for a standard warrant card, with built in security features - if American Express can make a secure card, why can't the Government (oh yes, American Express have more money ! :) )

I'd like to think alarm bells would be ringing if an 'officer' approached anyone claiming to be 'undercover'. Sadly the majority don't know the difference between plain clothed officers and undercover officers.

Unfortunately this is an effective way of orchestrating crime. The levels of obedience seen when asked to do something by an authority figure, or what they think is an authority figure is significantly higher, often ignoring instincts if something doesn't feel quite right.

Absolutely. People need to know what a warrant card should look like, otherwise it's pointless having one.
