The test is not to catch you out, so it should not be a surprise if you're not fit because of your eyes.
Let me just repeat that:
it should not be a surprise if you're not fit because of your eyes.
Find the requirements, and go to an optician. Get an eye test done, and see whether you're fit or not. If you are not, stop wasting your time and get the eye surgery done.
If your eyesight is that bad that you know for sure that you will need your eyes done (which was my case, for example), then before you do anything else, read the requirements on your force. The met requires 6 months after your operation before passing the medical!

The eyesight requirements are published, so you should be able to check those ones for the force you're applying to.

Yes as I said, I know I need eye surgery and I am booked in for my consultation tomorrow, but I am concerned on the short time scale as I had heard you need six weeks recovery before you can pass the medical and this then leads up very close to the start of the training course at the end of June.

I had to wait 6 weeks and I think I will just miss the next training so will start in November.
At the end of the day from what you've said you'll have to get it done so if it means missing the next training then so be it, at least you'll still be considered because you won't unless you get it done!

No I think maybe I am not being clear with my question, I know for sure that I need surgery. I booked my consultation the day I found out I passed my assessment and now have to wait two weeks for surgery. But the big question is, is it possible to have eye sight test signed off by the police only a couple of days before the training course starts?
Probably not.

Not true, It's 6 weeks. I know as I had my eyes done the first week of Jan 2010 and had my Medical/eyesight test late Feb 2010. Started training in April 2010.

CJ, I am 6 weeks post laser surgery today exactly. My medical is on the 19th, I start my training on the 27th. If that isn't cutting it fine I dont know what is. Good luck with your consultation.
Whoops double post

I have called my station and and advised them that I will only be able to have my medical 4 days before the course starts. I am waiting to hear if this will be too late but they said the person who knows about these things is not back till 26th April, so I will just have to go ahead at full steam and hope that a medical at such a late stage will not stop me starting the course on time.

Ahh that's annoying. I've found though certainly in my case HR have bent over backwards to help me with mine with the training starting so soon after my 6 weeks has passed, I'm sure they'll sort it for you. I went with optical express too for my surgery and they were really good. Had my treatment at the Trafford centre of all places! If you have any questions about it feel free to msg me

Went to check back, and you're correct. 6 weeks.
However, my eyesight was bad 6 weeks after the operation anyway!

I'm not of much use to this topic, but can anyone recommend who to go for Laser Eye Surgery? I was going to book a consultation with Optical Express but I have read bad reviews about them so decided not to go ahead...
Also, what is the approximate amount you spend in total for it?
I don't have extremely bad eye sight - I had my eyes tested in November last year and I am just in the beginning of short sightedness, but it feels like I am blind, it's horrible being short sighted! I hate wearing glasses and I am having trouble wearing contact lenses due to allergic conjunctivitis, so I am considering Laser Eye Surgery.
Any advice/views/opinions welcome

I went with Optical Express for my surgery and received very good care throughout my experience. By all means shop around and find the best deal. I had consultations with both OE, Ultralase and Optimax.
The equipment they use is the same across the board, so there is no difference there.
I heavily researched the surgery before I even had my consultations and yes there are bad reviews. However, I found them to be across the board for all of the providers. Having had the surgery I reckon the bad experiences are from individual reactions to the procedure, it would seem some people heal quickly and have brilliant eyesight, others develop problems and the whole experience for them is very negative because of this. (though I don't doubt unfortunately every now and then someone doesn't get the care and attention they need, but I bet this happens with all of the companies).
Also, people tend to mention a bad experience, not many speak up when they had a positive one. So this will skew the balance of negative reviews against the positive ones.
I can only speak from my experience but I receieved really good care and still am, from Optical Express. I had my surgery at the Trafford Centre (!) and my consultation and after care at Preston. I have friends who have had the surgery with Ultralase and Optimax, both of whom received the upmost care and attention throughout.
I hope this helps. I took ages deciding who I would go for, I chose Optical Express as the care they gave me from the minute I walked through the door was the best, they were not the cheapest by a few hundred pounds. (I also looked into surgery with The London Eye Hospital- perhaps enquire there as they are obviously very specialised).
Take your time
Good luck
(Oh, and price wise, £2700. Do haggle though. It depends on prescription though, pre-op I had an astigmatism of -1.25, and I was shortsighted -4.50 and -3.75. My eyesight is now at 0 and my astigmatism has been corrected

I went with Ultralase and the treatment I chose was the LASIK wavefront ultra elite which is the best one they provide (it corrects haloing and things like that so your vision is 'crisper').
I thought the whole experience was great and everyone was really friendly and very informative.
I too am short sighted -1.5 and -1.75 but I also had a bad astigmatism. I am 4 weeks post op and I think my vision is around about 20/20.
I had no problems at all after my op, with no pain what so ever but obviously this varies from person to person.
The total cost for mine was £3951 that was with 10% discount and 3 years interest free credit. Worth every penny I think though!!
Good luck with what ever you choose to do
