Time To Kick Some Of My Colleagues Up The A%$*

I went in to the station today to be met by a colleague who had just failed their paper sift for the regulars (Wilts were recruiting for 15-18 places). This officer was handing back their kit and materials. They told me "If I'm not good enough to get paid to do this I'm not being a special - wasn't ever interested in working as a special I just wanted to be a regular and this was a means to an end."
A second colleague (rarely seen - Elvis is spotted more often) admitted to only being in the specials to make friends and hopefully one in particular ... they weren't really interested in being a special.
So if you're reading this forum and thinking of joining I'd like to ask you to think seriously if ...
1. You're looking to join the regulars. - Nothing wrong with that, best of luck but while you're a special join in and learn something ... don't just use us as a means to an end. - If you're not up for being a special in the meantime don't join.
2. If you're looking for love ... try uniform dating or some other similar site ... we're not a dating agency
3. If you think being a special is beneath you and you only want to be a regular you probably don't get diversity - in my experience, the specials welcome anyone who wants to contribute but we don't need passengers...
4. If you give up after failing a paper sift you probably haven't got what it takes to be a regular so thanks but no thanks... I haven't met a regular who passed all their applications and promotions - get real it's competitive and the best place to learn by your lost marks may well be in the specials - if you're willing to put some work in !
Rant over !

Perhaps I need to transfer to the Met...
I had a bit of a reputation at my first nick. They asked if I was going after sequential shoulder numbers
Haha, well it's one of the better reputations to have I suppose.

You will get thrown back in the service, but failing at the paper-sift stage is purely your own fault: the Force doesn't alter the pass mark to determine how many get through, but means that the candidate simply didn't answer correctly.
We can only hope that the contract, coming in now, will help control and weed out some of those who join for the wrong reasons.

I spend a huge amount of time learning and developing making sure I want to do the job etc. And get told I didn't even pass the papersift? Myself and several others I know would make very good police officers as already doing a good job as a special. I don't know why I failed the papersift, or why some of my colleagues did. I am awaiting the feedback on my application before I comment in detail.
I will be checking my application again against the criterias I should have met, then will get a copy of someone who has been put through.
Personally, I don't think somthing is quite right.
Thats my rant over.

Sorry you failed, but the paper-sift is only on what is written down, it doesn't take previous experience as a special into account.I've recently been rejected from internal application at paper sift. I applied and answered the competency questions when joining the specials about 3years ago, got through fine with no problems.

No, not for that one I fear. I too failed just recently at interview stage for a specials post, and will get my feedback soon - it is important to learn I think where you went wrong and could have done better.I have already done the same application just with slightly differing competency questions which Is why I am stumped. My answers ticked the majority of the competencys to show from the lists we were given. Do you know by any chance what date the feedback will be given to candidates?

While the starting point has always been how to help the officer return to operational duties, these discussions have been far more robust than previous attempts. So far 12 officers are returning to duty on an agreed action plan with 15 resignations accepted from officers who are no longer able to continue in the role.
I have a further 25 officers to speak to over the coming 7-10 days, but expect our number of 'non-operational' officers to be close to zero within the next fortnight.
