Alright young'uns,

Northumbria Police have launched a Police Cadet Scheme and are currently looking for members.

You can pick up an application from any of these stations in the force area, Berwick upon Tweed, Morpeth, Bedlington, Hexham, Etal Lane, Newcastle, Middle Engine Lane, North Tyneside, Gateshead, South Shields and Gillbridge, Sunderland. Or alternatively download one from the Cadets section of the Northumbria Police website.

The age requirements for joining are as follows:

"You need to be 14 or 15 (i.e. all Year 10 pupils + anyone born before 1 June 1998) and live in one of the areas listed below. This is because cadets will be involved with their local community. You also need to have lived in the UK for the last three years"

All the information can be found on the Northumbria Police website, here:

Yeah, it should be good to see young people in the area doing something positive rather than hanging about being a pain!

I hope they give us some opportunities to get involved! It would not only be good for the cadets, but it's another string to our bows when they start taking PCs on again!

They asked if we wanted to get involved during the trial at Gateshead and at first people sounded a little bit interested but then the bombshell of our training officer working with cadets instead of training nights stopped that

I love the fact they will be involved in a "night shift patrol" - suppose its good canon fodder! :p

If I remember correctly last year this was done in the metro centre, which strangely is closed during that time......

The purpose being that they deal with simulated events apparently.

Cadet disorder van anyone? :new_no:

On a serious note though, surely there are certain situations when they could go out on patrol. Civilian observers do it, the only problem I could see would be the age factor but if the patrol was carefully selected (family orientated event maybe) then why not.

Not many of those type of events happen during the night though, I think the whole night patrol is just to make it seem exciting and out of the ordinary. To be fair if they did it on a mid week night I don't really think there would be any danger of anything too drastic happening!

Maybe some Cadets from other forces can give us a better explanation of what a cadet "patrol" involves!

There needs to be more of a drive on cadet schemes in my opinion.

I was in the Army Cadet Force as a youngster and did some amazing things ;)

A shame the LTO's are ditching SC training to concentrate on the cadets though!

Well they can concentrate even more on cadets as training has been changed to monthly
