Hello DS Warner here again :new_hmmm:

I am an applicant for the MSC (Met Special Constables). As of yet I do not have much of an intention to go into Policing as a full time career (ie: Reg officer) however if I really like it and somehow I end up deviating from my current plans then yes I may well become a full time officer.

My question is: seeing as I have a good couple years ahead of me (up to 5 or more to decide) ..... If I move up the ranks as a special IE: move up to S/Sgt or a S/Inspector or even Divisional Officer , would I retain that rank but the regular version ie a straight Sgt or Inspector or Chief Inspector etc....... If I was to join the regulars or would I have to start all from the beginning again as a Constable (PC) and move my way up again.

Thanks very much.

If you are saying, if you become a Specials Sgt would you become a sgt at a regular level etc Then my answer is no, no you wouldn't. To become any rank at a regular level you have to sit exams like the Osprey exams et al. So in answer to your question, you will become a P.C. then if you choose to increase your rank you have to sit the necessary exams and pass selection boards etc.

To add the reason: specials "above SC" do not hold the legally created ranks. They are administrative grades, you may even be ordered to do what one says, and feel like you should acknowledge them as such, call them Sir/Ma'am or whatever.

They do not however hold the legally constituted rank of Sgt, Inspector or whatever.

....and therefore don't hold the powers in law that officers of that rank hold. Therefore they aren't actually "sergeants" or whatever...
